Audio software, samplers, and editing applications may require WAV instead of a raw BIN file. Converting it provides an uncompressed PCM file that can be edited, played, or archived with broad compatibility.

What the BIN format is

In the Audio category, .bin usually identifies either headerless raw audio data or a binary image of an audio CD. Raw audio BIN files contain samples without enough header information to identify the sample rate, bit depth, channel count, or byte order. CD-image BIN files normally accompany a .cue file, which describes tracks, offsets, and index points.

CD-authoring and disc-imaging programs such as CDRWin, ImgBurn, and Alcohol 120% can create BIN/CUE audio images. Recording tools, embedded systems, samplers, and legacy audio applications can also produce headerless binary PCM files. The extension alone does not reveal which type you have.

What the WAV format is

WAV is a RIFF container commonly used for uncompressed PCM audio. Its header records properties such as sample rate, channel count, bit depth, and data length, allowing media players and audio editors to identify the stream without external settings.

WAV preserves the source samples when the source is PCM and is supported by Audacity, Adobe Audition, Reaper, most digital audio workstations, samplers, and operating-system media players. It uses more storage than MP3, AAC, or other compressed formats, so it is mainly used for editing, production, interchange, and archival masters.

How to actually convert BIN to WAV

Identify a BIN/CUE disc image

Look for a .cue file with the same base name as the BIN. Open it in a text editor and check for lines such as FILE "album.bin" BINARY and TRACK 01 AUDIO. Do not rename the BIN or separate it from the CUE file; the CUE references the image and supplies the track layout.

For a BIN/CUE image, use the command-line utility bchunk, available for Linux and also through package managers on other desktop systems:

bchunk -w album.bin album.cue track

This extracts audio tracks as WAV files such as track01.wav and track02.wav. Use the extracted files individually, or join them in an audio editor if the original disc was intended to be one continuous recording.

Convert headerless PCM BIN data with FFmpeg

Raw PCM requires the correct format parameters. For 16-bit little-endian, stereo, 44.1 kHz audio, run:

ffmpeg -f s16le -ar 44100 -ac 2 -i input.bin output.wav

Replace the input options when the source uses different properties: -f u8 for unsigned 8-bit PCM, -f s24le for packed 24-bit little-endian PCM, -f f32le for 32-bit floating-point PCM, -ar 48000 for 48 kHz, and -ac 1 for mono. Big-endian data uses formats such as s16be. FFmpeg writes the missing WAV header to output.wav.

Use the built-in online converter

You can convert a compatible audio BIN file on 101convert.com for free without installing software: choose BIN as the input format, upload the file, select WAV as the output, and download the result. A BIN/CUE disc image may need track extraction first, because the BIN can contain multiple tracks rather than one ordinary audio stream.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

A BIN-to-WAV conversion cannot determine missing raw-audio parameters reliably. An incorrect sample rate changes speed and pitch; an incorrect channel count changes duration and channel layout; an incorrect bit depth or byte order produces noise or distorted samples. Obtain the settings from the application that created the file, its documentation, a matching CUE file, or a known-good sample.

WAV conversion does not improve the source. If the BIN contains compressed or damaged data, the WAV only stores the decoded or reconstructed result. Keep the original BIN and CUE files because WAV generally loses disc indexes, gaps, CD-Text, and other image metadata. A standard 16-bit stereo 44.1 kHz WAV requires about 10.1 MB per minute.
