Converting an M2T recording to WAV is useful when an editor, DAW, recorder, or transcription workflow needs the audio without the original transport-stream container. The process extracts the audio stream and stores it as uncompressed PCM, which is suitable for editing and archiving but produces a much larger file.

What the M2T format is

M2T usually identifies an MPEG-2 Transport Stream file, often produced by HDV camcorders and video capture systems. It can contain MPEG-2 video together with MPEG Layer II, PCM, or other audio streams, so an M2T file is normally a video recording rather than an audio-only format.

You may encounter M2T files from older Sony, Canon, and JVC HDV cameras, tape transfers, broadcast equipment, and capture applications. The extension does not guarantee one exact audio codec; the contained stream must be inspected before conversion.

What the WAV format is

WAV is an audio container commonly used for uncompressed PCM data. It is supported by DAWs, audio editors, media players, video editors, transcription software, and many hardware recorders.

WAV preserves the decoded sample values without lossy compression when PCM is selected. Its disadvantages are large files and limited metadata compared with formats such as BWF. At 48 kHz, 16-bit stereo, WAV requires approximately 10.6 MB per minute.

How to convert M2T to WAV

Using FFmpeg

FFmpeg is the most reliable desktop option because it can read MPEG-2 Transport Stream files and select a particular audio stream. Install FFmpeg, open a terminal in the folder containing the source file, and inspect its streams with:

ffprobe -i input.m2t

Extract the first audio stream as 16-bit PCM WAV:

ffmpeg -i input.m2t -map 0:a:0 -c:a pcm_s16le output.wav

For a 24-bit WAV, use -c:a pcm_s24le. To standardize the output for a video-editing workflow, explicitly set the sample rate and channel count, for example:

ffmpeg -i input.m2t -map 0:a:0 -ar 48000 -ac 2 -c:a pcm_s16le output.wav

-map 0:a:0 selects the first audio stream, -ar 48000 sets 48 kHz, and -ac 2 creates stereo. If the M2T contains multiple audio streams, change the final stream index to 0:a:1, 0:a:2, and so on.

Using the built-in online converter

You can convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software: upload the M2T file, choose WAV as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file. Use a desktop converter instead when the recording is confidential, very large, or contains several audio streams that require manual selection.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Converting compressed M2T audio to PCM WAV does not restore information already lost during the original encoding. It prevents another lossy encoding step and makes the decoded audio easier to edit.

The output duration normally matches the selected stream, but damaged transport-stream packets can cause gaps, noise, or synchronization differences. If FFmpeg reports that no audio stream exists, the M2T contains video only or uses a stream that the installed build cannot decode.

Choose the source sample rate and bit depth when possible. Increasing 16-bit audio to 24-bit or changing 44.1 kHz to 48 kHz does not add detail; it only changes the storage representation and may introduce resampling artifacts.
