What the TREC format is
TREC is TechSmith's recording format for Camtasia and Camtasia Recorder. It stores screen-capture video, microphone or system audio, and recording metadata such as cursor information. You encounter it when a Camtasia recording has been saved before being exported to a conventional format such as MP4.
TREC is not a broadly supported interchange format. FFmpeg, VLC, and many web or editing applications may not decode it directly, so exporting through Camtasia is usually the most reliable first step.
What the OGV format is
OGV is an Ogg container commonly containing Theora video and Vorbis audio. It is useful when a Linux-oriented application, media archive, or older web workflow specifically requires an open Ogg-based format.
OGV avoids proprietary container licensing concerns, but it has less support than MP4 in current browsers, phones, televisions, and editing software. Use it when the receiving application explicitly supports OGV rather than as a general-purpose replacement for MP4.
How to convert TREC to OGV
Using Camtasia and FFmpeg
- Open the
.trecfile in Camtasia. If it does not open as a project, create a new Camtasia project and import the TREC recording into the media bin or timeline. - Export an intermediate video through Share → Local File or the equivalent local-export command in your Camtasia version. Select MP4, retain the original dimensions and frame rate, and export the recording.
- Install FFmpeg, then run this command in the folder containing the exported file:
ffmpeg -i camtasia-export.mp4 -c:v libtheora -q:v 7 -c:a libvorbis -q:a 5 recording.ogv
The video quality scale for libtheora runs from 0 to 10; higher values generally produce better quality and larger files. Vorbis audio quality uses a similar scale. For a recording without audio, use -an instead of the audio codec options:
ffmpeg -i camtasia-export.mp4 -c:v libtheora -q:v 7 -an recording.ogv
Using the online converter
You can convert the file for free on the 101convert.com website without installing software. Upload the TREC file, choose OGV as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file. If the service rejects the TREC container, export it from Camtasia to MP4 first and convert that MP4 to OGV.
Quality and compatibility limits
This process normally involves two encoding stages: Camtasia creates the intermediate video, and FFmpeg re-encodes it as Theora. Keep the intermediate export at the source resolution and frame rate; resizing or lowering quality before the OGV conversion causes additional detail loss.
Check the output with ffprobe recording.ogv or a player that supports Ogg media. OGV support is inconsistent in modern software, and some applications accept Ogg audio but reject Theora video. If the target program does not specifically require OGV, H.264 MP4 is usually more compatible.
