What the TREC format is

TREC is TechSmith's proprietary recording container used by Camtasia Recorder and Camtasia. It can store screen video, webcam footage, microphone audio, cursor data, and recording metadata in one file. You typically encounter .trec files after recording a presentation, software demonstration, training session, or desktop tutorial with Camtasia.

TREC is not a standard delivery format, and most general-purpose video editors cannot decode it directly. Camtasia is the appropriate application for opening the source and exporting its audio and video.

What the M2T format is

M2T usually denotes an MPEG-2 Transport Stream file, often associated with HDV cameras, capture systems, and older broadcast or editing workflows. It commonly contains MPEG-2 video and MPEG-1 Layer II or AC-3 audio multiplexed into a transport stream.

M2T can be useful when a video device, legacy editor, or authoring workflow specifically requires MPEG-2 transport-stream data. Unlike TREC, it does not preserve Camtasia editing data such as cursor effects, callouts, tracks, or project structure.

How to actually convert TREC to M2T

Using the built-in online converter

1. Open the TREC-to-M2T converter on 101convert.com.
2. Upload the .trec file and choose M2T as the output format.
3. Start the conversion and download the generated .m2t file when processing finishes.
4. Test the result in the target device or editor; an M2T extension alone does not guarantee compliance with a particular HDV profile.

Using Camtasia and FFmpeg

1. Open the TREC file in Camtasia and confirm that the timeline contains the required screen, camera, and audio tracks.
2. Choose Export → Local File or the equivalent export command, select MP4, and save an intermediate file such as recording.mp4. Use the highest practical quality and the source frame size.
3. Install FFmpeg, place the intermediate file in the working directory, and run:

This creates an MPEG-2 video transport stream with 48 kHz MP2 audio. Change -b:v to suit the receiving workflow; 25 Mb/s is typical of some HDV profiles but is not a universal M2T requirement.

Quality and compatibility limitations

The Camtasia-to-MP4 export followed by MPEG-2 encoding is a two-stage conversion, so the result can contain generation loss. Export from Camtasia at the original dimensions and frame rate, and avoid scaling unless the destination requires a specific HDV frame size.

M2T is an extension convention rather than one complete specification. A device may require 1440×1080 or 1280×720 video, a fixed 25 Mb/s or 19 Mb/s bitrate, interlaced fields, a particular frame rate, MPEG-2 profile, or AC-3 instead of MP2 audio. If the target system rejects the file, obtain its exact MPEG-2 transport-stream profile and adjust the FFmpeg video, audio, frame-rate, and interlacing options accordingly.

Camtasia annotations, cursor effects, transitions, and editability are rendered into ordinary video during export. Keep the original TREC file and Camtasia project if further editing is needed.
