.m2t file instead of a camcorder .MOD recording. The conversion changes the MPEG-2 container from Program Stream to Transport Stream; it does not make standard-definition footage high-definition.
What the MOD format is
In the Video category, .MOD usually identifies MPEG-2 Program Stream video recorded by older JVC Everio and some Canon and Panasonic camcorders. These files commonly contain interlaced MPEG-2 video with MP2 or AC-3 audio, usually at standard-definition resolutions such as 720×576 or 720×480. The recording may include companion .MOI files containing camcorder metadata.
MOD files are encountered after copying footage directly from a camcorder or its memory card. Some players can open them after the extension is changed to .MPG, because the underlying stream is often similar to an MPEG program stream, but renaming does not produce an M2T transport stream.
What the M2T format is
.M2T is commonly used for MPEG-2 Transport Stream video, especially HDV camera recordings and workflows that expect MPEG-2 TS packets. Transport Stream is designed to carry synchronized audio and video through broadcast, recording, and editing systems and is more tolerant of transmission errors than Program Stream.
An M2T file can contain SD material converted from MOD, but the output remains limited by the source resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and interlacing. The extension does not guarantee HDV-compliant 1440×1080 video.
How to actually convert MOD to M2T
FFmpeg is the most controllable desktop option because it can remux compatible streams without recompressing them.
- Install FFmpeg and place
input.MODin a convenient folder. - Run this remux command in that folder:
ffmpeg -i input.MOD -map 0 -c copy -f mpegts output.m2t - Open
output.m2tin the target editor or device and check the audio, aspect ratio, and interlacing before processing the full batch.
The command copies the original streams, so it avoids an additional generation of video loss. If FFmpeg reports that a stream cannot be muxed into MPEG-2 TS, or the destination accepts only conventional MPEG-2/MP2 combinations, re-encode instead:
ffmpeg -i input.MOD -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -c:v mpeg2video -q:v 2 -c:a mp2 -b:a 192k -f mpegts output.m2t
For multiple files, repeat the command with a distinct output name for each source. Preserve the original MOD files until the converted files have been tested. You can also convert the file for free on the 101convert.com website without installing software.
Quality, compatibility, and limitations
Remuxing changes the container but preserves the source codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and interlacing. Re-encoding can reduce quality and may alter audio timing, but it improves compatibility when a receiving application rejects the original audio codec or stream layout.
Keep interlaced settings intact for camcorder footage; deinterlace only when the destination requires progressive video. If the image appears stretched, inspect the source aspect-ratio flag rather than scaling automatically. Companion .MOI metadata is not normally carried into the M2T file, so recording dates, thumbnails, and camcorder indexes may be lost.
