Some Blu-ray authoring tools, AVCHD workflows, and media servers require an MPEG-2 transport stream rather than a camcorder’s MOD file. Converting the recording to M2TS preserves the video while placing it in a container these systems recognize.

What the MOD format is

In the Video category, MOD is a camcorder filename extension for MPEG-2 video recordings. JVC Everio and some Panasonic and Canon standard-definition camcorders created MOD files, often alongside MOI metadata files.

MOD files generally contain MPEG-2 video with MPEG audio, using a program-stream-style container. The extension does not identify a unique codec, so two MOD files can differ in resolution, frame rate, audio format, and bitrate. Copy the associated MOI file only if a legacy camcorder application needs its recording metadata; it is not required for video conversion.

What the M2TS format is

M2TS is an MPEG-2 transport stream used by Blu-ray video and AVCHD camcorders. It can carry MPEG-2 or H.264 video and formats such as AC-3, AAC, or LPCM audio, with packetized streams designed for playback and multiplexing.

M2TS is useful for Blu-ray authoring, AVCHD-compatible devices, and software that expects transport-stream input. The .m2ts extension describes the intended container, but implementations may differ in packet size, metadata, and Blu-ray directory structure; a standalone M2TS file is not automatically a complete Blu-ray disc.

How to actually convert MOD to M2TS

FFmpeg is the most practical desktop option because it reads common camcorder MOD variants and can either copy compatible streams or transcode them. Install FFmpeg, open a terminal in the folder containing the source, and inspect the streams first:

ffprobe input.mod

Try a stream-copy conversion when the source codecs are accepted by the target playback software:

ffmpeg -i input.mod -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? -c copy -f mpegts output.m2ts

This is fast and does not reduce quality. If the resulting file has playback, audio, or authoring problems, transcode to a broadly compatible H.264 and AC-3 combination:

ffmpeg -i input.mod -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 18 -c:a ac3 -b:a 192k -f mpegts output.m2ts

Use a lower-quality setting such as -crf 20 to reduce size; higher CRF values reduce quality. For a Blu-ray authoring workflow, import the generated file into the authoring application and let that application create the required BDMV and playlist directories.

You can also convert the file for free on 101convert.com without installing software. Upload the MOD file, choose M2TS as the output format, start the conversion, and download the result. Keep the original recording because online and desktop conversion settings may differ in codec selection and metadata retention.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Changing the container cannot improve the source recording. Stream copying retains the original resolution, interlacing, frame rate, bitrate, and compression artifacts; transcoding introduces another generation of compression.

Standard-definition MOD footage is commonly interlaced. Preserve that characteristic unless the destination specifically requires progressive video; deinterlacing during conversion changes motion detail and should be performed deliberately with an appropriate filter.

Some players accept an MPEG transport stream saved with an .m2ts extension even when it uses ordinary 188-byte transport packets, while strict Blu-ray or AVCHD tools may require particular codecs, packetization, timestamps, or folder structures. If a device rejects the stream-copy result, use the H.264/AC-3 command or the device’s documented AVCHD profile rather than merely renaming the file.
