HEVC files often need conversion when a Blu-ray authoring tool, television, media player, or editing application accepts M2TS but does not recognize the original container or codec. The conversion can either repackage the video without quality loss or re-encode it for hardware that does not support HEVC.

What the HEVC format is

HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding, also called H.265) is a video compression codec, not technically a container format. It provides roughly comparable visual quality at a lower bitrate than H.264, so it is common in 4K recordings, UHD Blu-ray sources, IP cameras, smartphones, screen captures, and downloads.

HEVC video may be stored in .mp4, .mkv, .mov, or a raw .hevc stream. Cameras, OBS Studio, FFmpeg, HandBrake, smartphones, and professional video applications can create files containing HEVC. The filename extension alone does not identify the codec; FFmpeg's ffprobe or MediaInfo can show the video and audio streams inside the file.

What the M2TS format is

M2TS is a filename extension for MPEG-2 Transport Stream files used by Blu-ray video, AVCHD camcorders, and some broadcast and playback systems. It carries video, audio, subtitles, timestamps, and program information in a transport stream designed for continuous playback and error tolerance.

M2TS is useful for Blu-ray authoring workflows, AVCHD-compatible equipment, and players that expect transport-stream input rather than MP4 or MKV. The container can carry several codecs, including H.264, MPEG-2 video, and in some implementations HEVC, but an .m2ts extension does not make a file Blu-ray-compliant. Authoring specifications also restrict resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio format, and stream layout.

How to convert HEVC to M2TS

FFmpeg provides the most predictable desktop conversion. Install a current FFmpeg build, then inspect the source:

ffprobe input.mp4

Use stream copying when the source already has compatible streams and only the container needs to change:

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -map 0 -c copy -f mpegts output.m2ts

This is a remux, so it is fast and does not reduce quality. It may fail for unusual input streams, or it may produce an M2TS file that a Blu-ray player rejects because HEVC, AAC, subtitles, or the source parameters are outside that player's supported profile.

For broader hardware compatibility, re-encode the video to H.264 and the audio to AC-3:

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 18 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a ac3 -b:a 384k -f mpegts output.m2ts

crf 18 gives high-quality H.264 output; increasing the value reduces file size and quality, while decreasing it increases both. Replace input.mp4 with the actual HEVC-containing filename. For a raw stream, use input.hevc, but supply audio separately because a raw HEVC file normally contains video only.

When the target device specifically requires an AVCHD or Blu-ray structure, creating one M2TS file is not enough. Use a Blu-ray or AVCHD authoring application after encoding, because authoring adds playlists, clip metadata, navigation data, and the required directory structure.

For a no-installation conversion, upload the file to 101convert.com and select M2TS as the output format. Browser-based processing may impose file-size, upload-time, or codec limitations; do not use it for confidential recordings unless its handling policy meets your requirements.

Quality and compatibility limits

Remuxing with -c copy preserves the original HEVC video bitstream, but it does not improve compatibility. Re-encoding to H.264 is necessary for devices limited to H.264, and it introduces generation loss and additional processing time.

Check the target specification before choosing settings. Common Blu-ray-compatible workflows use H.264 video with a supported frame rate and level, AAC is often unsuitable for older Blu-ray players, and 4K or HDR HEVC may require UHD Blu-ray-specific authoring rather than standard Blu-ray output. Use MediaInfo or ffprobe to verify resolution, frame rate, audio codec, channel count, and bitrate after conversion.
