Legacy HDV camcorders and video editors may require an MPEG-2 transport stream with an .m2t extension instead of an HEVC file. Converting changes the video codec and container, so the result is usually larger and may lose quality.
What the HEVC format is
HEVC, also called H.265, is a video compression standard designed to deliver lower bitrates than H.264 at similar visual quality. It commonly appears in 4K phone footage, mirrorless-camera recordings, action cameras, screen captures, broadcast files, and exports from applications such as DaVinci Resolve, Adobe Premiere Pro, and OBS Studio.
HEVC video is usually stored inside an .mp4, .mov, or .mkv container. A file named .hevc or .h265 may instead contain an elementary video stream without audio or container metadata. The filename extension alone does not identify the frame rate, resolution, audio format, or color properties.
What the M2T format is
M2T generally denotes an MPEG-2 transport stream saved with an .m2t extension. In video workflows it is strongly associated with HDV camcorders, which record MPEG-2 video and compressed audio in a transport stream for tape capture and editing.
M2T is useful when a legacy editor, camera utility, ingest application, or hardware device expects MPEG-2 transport-stream media. Its compatibility comes from MPEG-2 and transport-stream support rather than from the extension itself. An M2T file can use different resolutions, frame rates, audio codecs, and transport-stream parameters, so some devices accept only files matching a specific HDV profile.
How to actually convert HEVC to M2T
For a desktop conversion, FFmpeg provides direct control over the codec, audio, frame size, and transport-stream muxer. The following command converts a normal HEVC container file to MPEG-2 video with MPEG audio:
ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c:v mpeg2video -b:v 25M -maxrate 25M -bufsize 25M -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a mp2 -b:a 384k -ar 48000 -f mpegts output.m2t
Replace input.mp4 with the actual source filename. The command keeps the input dimensions and frame rate unless FFmpeg must change them for codec constraints. -f mpegts creates the MPEG transport stream; -c:v mpeg2video removes HEVC compression by encoding MPEG-2; and -c:a mp2 creates audio commonly accepted by HDV-oriented software.
For a raw HEVC stream, use the correct input format explicitly:
ffmpeg -f hevc -i input.hevc -c:v mpeg2video -b:v 25M -c:a mp2 -b:a 384k -ar 48000 -f mpegts output.m2t
A raw HEVC file normally contains no audio, so the second command creates a video-only M2T unless an additional audio input is supplied. Use ffprobe input.mp4 to inspect the source streams before converting.
If the target is an HDV-style 1080 recording, scaling to the format expected by the receiving device may be necessary:
ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -vf "scale=1440:1080,setdar=16/9" -c:v mpeg2video -b:v 25M -maxrate 25M -bufsize 25M -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a mp2 -b:a 384k -ar 48000 -f mpegts output.m2t
Do not apply that scaling command automatically: it reduces a 1920-pixel-wide source to 1440 pixels and is appropriate only when the destination expects HDV 1440×1080 with a 16:9 display aspect ratio. A 720p HDV workflow requires different dimensions and a compatible frame rate.
You can also convert the file for free on 101convert.com without installing software. Select the HEVC file, choose M2T as the output format, start the conversion, and download the result. Online conversion may be unsuitable for large or confidential footage because the source must be uploaded and processing limits can apply.
Quality, compatibility, and limitations
HEVC-to-M2T conversion is normally a lossy re-encode. MPEG-2 is less efficient than HEVC, so the M2T file may be much larger even at a similar resolution. Choose the highest bitrate supported by the target device, and avoid repeated conversions.
Changing the container alone is not enough when the receiving application requires HDV. The video must use MPEG-2 rather than HEVC, and the stream may need a specific frame size, interlacing mode, frame rate, bitrate, audio codec, and transport-stream structure. Ask for the destination device's supported profile if a generic M2T file is rejected.
Do not add interlacing merely because the extension is .m2t. Preserve progressive video unless the destination specifically requires interlaced HDV. If the source has a variable frame rate, convert it to a constant frame rate before delivery to older editing hardware, because legacy ingest tools may display timing errors or audio drift.
