HEVC video may not play on older televisions, media players, editing applications, or devices that support DivX but lack H.265 decoding. Converting it produces an MPEG-4 Part 2 video, usually in an AVI container, for broader legacy-device compatibility.

What the HEVC format is

HEVC, also called H.265, is a video codec designed to deliver similar visual quality at lower bitrates than H.264. Phones, action cameras, screen-recording tools, Blu-ray sources, and modern video editors commonly create HEVC files. The video may be stored in .mp4, .mkv, or .mov containers, so the filename extension alone does not identify the codec.

HEVC reduces file size efficiently but requires newer decoding hardware or software. Renaming an HEVC file to .avi does not convert its codec and will not fix compatibility problems.

What the DIVX format is

DivX video generally refers to MPEG-4 Part 2 Advanced Simple Profile video encoded with a DivX-compatible codec. It is commonly distributed in an AVI container with MP3 or AC-3 audio. Older DVD players, televisions, car stereos, game consoles, and media players often support this combination.

The format is useful when a device specifically lists DivX or MPEG-4 ASP support. Its main compatibility advantage comes at the cost of compression efficiency: an equivalent-quality DivX encode is normally larger than an HEVC encode, and converting from HEVC cannot restore detail already lost in the source.

How to convert HEVC to DIVX

For a desktop conversion, FFmpeg can decode HEVC and encode MPEG-4 Part 2 with a DivX-compatible FourCC. The following command creates an AVI file with MP3 audio:

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c:v mpeg4 -vtag DIVX -q:v 4 -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 192k output.avi

Replace input.mp4 with the actual HEVC filename. The -q:v 4 setting uses quality-based video encoding; lower values generally produce higher quality and larger files. Use -q:v 3 or -q:v 2 when the output shows visible artifacts, and test playback on the target device.

If the FFmpeg build includes the Xvid encoder, this alternative can provide more MPEG-4 ASP tuning options:

ffmpeg -i input.mkv -c:v libxvid -q:v 4 -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 192k output.avi

To convert without installing software, upload the file to the converter on 101convert.com, choose DIVX as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file. The service may impose file-size, duration, or codec-parameter limits.

Quality and compatibility limits

This conversion requires a full re-encode because HEVC and DivX use different video codecs. Expect some generational quality loss; keeping the source bitrate or choosing a lower quality value cannot recover missing detail.

AVI has limited support for modern metadata, variable-frame-rate behavior, subtitles, and some audio formats. For older DivX hardware, use a constant frame rate, stereo MP3 audio, and common dimensions such as 720×480 or 720×576. Some certified DivX players also require specific resolution, bitrate, GMC, or packed-bitstream settings; if playback fails, consult the device manual and encode to its stated profile.
