What the USM format is
USM, also called CRI Movie, is a proprietary video container developed by CRI Middleware and used mainly for game cutscenes, menus, advertisements, and other pre-rendered footage. You usually encounter .usm files inside a game installation, archive, or extracted console-game data.
USM files may contain proprietary wrapping, encryption, multiple video streams, and separate audio or subtitle streams. Their internal codec varies by title, so renaming .usm to .avi or .mp4 does not convert the video and normally will not make it playable.
What the DIVX format is
DIVX usually refers to MPEG-4 Part 2 video encoded with the DivX codec. A DivX file is often an AVI container carrying a video stream tagged DIVX or DX50, with MP3 audio for compatibility with older televisions, DVD players, media players, and editing applications.
DivX can provide smaller files than uncompressed or lightly compressed source video, but it is an older format. Modern devices generally support H.264 in MP4 more consistently than MPEG-4 Part 2 in DIVX.
How to actually convert USM to DIVX
- Make a copy of the original USM file. Do not overwrite game data.
- Open the conversion tool on 101convert.com, upload the
.usmfile, chooseDIVXas the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file. This option requires no installed software and is free to use. - Test the downloaded file in VLC or another player that supports DivX. Check both video and audio before deleting the source.
If the direct conversion fails, the USM may be encrypted or use a game-specific variant. Use an appropriate USM extractor or decrypter, such as the relevant VGMToolbox or USM extraction utility, to obtain a playable intermediate file. Only process files you are authorized to access.
After extraction, FFmpeg can encode a supported intermediate file as a DivX-compatible AVI:
ffmpeg -i extracted.mkv -c:v mpeg4 -vtag DIVX -q:v 4 -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 128k -f avi output.divx
Replace extracted.mkv with the actual extracted filename. Lower -q:v values increase video quality and file size; values around 3–5 are a practical starting range. If the source has no audio, remove -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 128k.
Quality and compatibility limitations
USM conversion cannot restore detail already lost in the source. Re-encoding to DIVX introduces another generation of lossy compression, so retain the extracted or original USM video for archiving and use the DIVX copy only for compatibility.
Some USM files contain several language tracks, subtitles, or segmented streams. A basic converter may select only the default stream; verify the output if those tracks matter. Encrypted or damaged USM files may require title-specific extraction and cannot be converted by a general-purpose transcoder alone.
