VIV files are legacy VivoActive video files that newer players and editors may not open. Converting them to DIVX creates a more widely supported MPEG-4 Part 2 video file for playback, sharing, or editing on older DivX-compatible devices.
What the VIV format is
VIV is the extension associated with VivoActive video, a proprietary streaming and compressed-video format developed by Vivo Software. You may encounter it in old video archives, downloaded clips, or files created with legacy VivoActive Producer and related VivoActive software.
VIV is not the same as a normal AVI file with a different extension. Its video and audio streams may require a decoder that is absent from current media players. File associations with VivoActive Player or old versions of RealPlayer can help identify the format, but opening the file does not guarantee that the player can export it.
What the DIVX format is
DIVX generally refers to an AVI-based video file containing MPEG-4 Part 2 video encoded with the DivX codec. It is intended for playback on compatible desktop software, older DVD players, televisions, and media devices.
DIVX is useful when a device specifically expects DivX-compatible MPEG-4 video. It usually offers smaller files than uncompressed or lightly compressed video, but it is an older format: modern devices often support H.264 or H.265 more reliably than DivX.
How to convert VIV to DIVX
FFmpeg is the most practical desktop option when the installed build includes a VIV decoder. It converts the video to MPEG-4 Part 2, marks the AVI video stream with the DIVX four-character code, and encodes audio as MP3 for broad DivX-device compatibility.
- Install a current FFmpeg build and place the VIV file in a convenient folder.
- Check whether FFmpeg can read the source with
ffprobe input.viv. The output should show one or more video streams and their duration. - Run
ffmpeg -i input.viv -c:v mpeg4 -vtag DIVX -q:v 4 -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 128k output.divx. - Open
output.divxin a compatible player and verify the picture, audio synchronization, duration, and aspect ratio.
The -q:v 4 setting uses quality-based MPEG-4 encoding; values around 3–5 are a reasonable range, with lower numbers producing larger files and better quality. Use a fixed bitrate instead when a device specifies one, for example -b:v 1500k. If the source has no audio, replace the audio options with -an.
For a no-install conversion, upload the file to 101convert.com, choose DIVX as the output format, and download the converted file after processing. Very old or damaged VIV files may fail in browser-based conversion because the source decoder cannot read their particular Vivo codec variant.
Quality, compatibility, and limitations
This conversion normally requires decoding the proprietary VIV stream and re-encoding it as MPEG-4 Part 2, so it is lossy. A higher output bitrate cannot restore detail already lost in the VIV source. Keep the original file and avoid repeated conversions.
Some DivX-certified devices impose restrictions on resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio format, and file size. If output.divx does not play, try MP3 audio at 128 or 160 kbps, a standard-definition resolution, and a moderate video bitrate such as -b:v 1000k to -b:v 2000k. FFmpeg may produce a valid MPEG-4 file even when a particular device rejects it because of those device-specific limits.
If ffprobe reports that the VIV format is unsupported, use an older VivoActive-compatible player or converter to export the file to AVI or another intermediate format, then run the FFmpeg command on that exported file. Renaming .viv to .divx does not convert the streams and will not solve codec incompatibility.
