What the VIV format is

In the video context, .viv usually identifies a VivoActive video created for older web-streaming systems. RealNetworks VivoActive software, including its player and encoding tools, produced or distributed these files in the 1990s and early 2000s.

VIV is uncommon today and may contain video encoded with a legacy Vivo codec that current media applications do not support consistently. The filename extension alone does not identify the exact codec, resolution, frame rate, or audio format inside the file.

What the M2TS format is

M2TS is a 192-byte MPEG-2 Transport Stream variant used by Blu-ray Disc, AVCHD cameras, and some HD recording devices. It can carry H.264/AVC, MPEG-2 video, HEVC in some workflows, and common audio streams such as AC-3, AAC, or uncompressed audio.

M2TS supports packetized streams, timestamps, and multiple audio or subtitle tracks, making it suitable for long recordings and disc-oriented workflows. An M2TS file is not automatically a complete Blu-ray disc structure; authoring still requires playlists, clip information, menus, and the required directory layout.

How to actually convert VIV to M2TS

The built-in converter at 101convert.com can process the file without installing desktop software. Upload the VIV file, choose M2TS as the output format, start the conversion, and download the generated file when processing finishes. This is the practical option when the service recognizes the particular legacy VIV codec.

For local conversion, first test whether FFmpeg can read the file:

ffprobe input.viv

If FFmpeg reports video and audio streams, try stream copying to avoid another lossy encode:

ffmpeg -i input.viv -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? -c copy -f mpegts -mpegts_m2ts_mode 1 output.m2ts

The -mpegts_m2ts_mode 1 option writes the 192-byte packet form normally associated with M2TS. Some players accept ordinary MPEG-TS packets in a file named .m2ts, but that is less compatible with Blu-ray-oriented software.

If stream copying fails because the original codec is unsupported by the destination workflow, transcode to broadly compatible H.264 and AC-3:

ffmpeg -i input.viv -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 18 -c:a ac3 -b:a 192k -f mpegts -mpegts_m2ts_mode 1 output.m2ts

Use a media player such as VLC to verify playback, or inspect the result with:

ffprobe output.m2ts

If FFmpeg and the online converter both reject the file, use the original VivoActive software or a legacy system capable of opening it to export an intermediate format such as AVI, then convert that exported file to M2TS.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Stream copying preserves the source quality but works only when FFmpeg can decode or remux the VIV streams and the resulting codecs are accepted by the target device. Transcoding is required when the legacy Vivo codec cannot be placed directly in a usable M2TS stream.

Converting cannot restore detail already lost through the old VIV compression. The H.264/AC-3 command changes both the video and audio codecs and may produce a larger file than the source.

For Blu-ray authoring, check the required frame rate, frame size, level, bitrate, audio format, and interlacing mode separately; a technically valid M2TS file may still fail an authoring application's strict AVCHD or Blu-ray profile checks.
