A VIV file may need conversion when legacy VivoActive video cannot be opened by a current editor, player, DVR, or sharing platform. Converting it to TRP creates an MPEG transport stream that many television recorders and media tools recognize, but the process usually requires video transcoding rather than a simple container change.

What the VIV format is

In the Video category, VIV refers primarily to the proprietary VivoActive video format associated with Vivo Software. Older VivoActive encoders, streaming tools, and the VivoActive Player created or played these files, so VIV files are most often found in legacy web-video archives, old software collections, and recordings made with discontinued applications.

VIV is not a modern universal container such as MP4. Its codec and metadata support are limited in current media players, and the .viv extension alone does not identify the exact encoding parameters. A file can also be damaged, incomplete, or produced by a less common application, so verify that it opens in a compatible legacy player before conversion.

What the TRP format is

TRP is commonly an MPEG-2 transport stream file. Digital television receivers, set-top boxes, HDTV recorders, and some DVR systems use the extension for recordings containing packetized video, audio, subtitles, and program data.

TRP is a container, not a single video codec. It can carry MPEG-2 video with MP2 or AC-3 audio, and some devices accept H.264 video with AAC or AC-3 audio. Its broad transport-stream compatibility makes it useful for hardware playback, but a particular DVR may require a specific codec, resolution, frame rate, audio format, or transport-stream structure.

How to actually convert VIV to TRP

Using FFmpeg

FFmpeg is the most practical desktop option when the installed build includes the VivoActive decoder. It can decode the legacy video, encode it in a format commonly accepted by TRP-capable devices, and write an MPEG transport stream.

  1. Install a current FFmpeg build and confirm that the source file is readable with ffmpeg -i input.viv.
  2. Convert the file with MPEG-2 video and MP2 audio, which is a conservative choice for older television equipment:

ffmpeg -i input.viv -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? -c:v mpeg2video -q:v 2 -c:a mp2 -b:a 192k -f mpegts output.trp

The -q:v 2 setting gives high MPEG-2 quality but can produce a substantially larger file than the VIV source. Use a higher value such as -q:v 4 or -q:v 5 to reduce size. The -map 0:a? option includes audio when present without failing on a silent source.

  • Play output.trp in VLC or another MPEG-TS-capable player, then test it on the intended DVR or television device.
  • If the target device accepts H.264 instead of MPEG-2, a smaller output may be produced with:

    ffmpeg -i input.viv -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 20 -c:a aac -b:a 160k -f mpegts output.trp

Use the second command only when the target hardware documents H.264/AAC support; an .trp extension does not guarantee that every TRP device will decode those streams.

    Using the online converter

You can convert the file for free on 101convert.com without installing software. Select the VIV input, choose TRP as the output, upload the file, start the conversion, and download the generated file. If the service rejects the file, FFmpeg may provide more diagnostic information about an unsupported or damaged VivoActive stream.

    Quality and compatibility limitations

VIV-to-TRP conversion is normally a lossy transcode: the VIV video is decoded and re-encoded, so it cannot improve the original resolution or remove compression artifacts. Choose the highest practical quality during conversion, but expect a larger file when using MPEG-2.

Some older VIV files contain audio formats that FFmpeg cannot decode, or they may use a damaged index that prevents normal seeking. If FFmpeg reports Invalid data found when processing input, try copying the file again from its original source and inspect it with ffprobe input.viv. A TRP file that plays on a computer may still fail on a DVR because the device requires fixed MPEG-2 dimensions, a particular frame rate, AC-3 rather than MP2 audio, or a proprietary recording structure.
