What the VIV format is
In the Video category, VIV identifies video files created with the Vivo video technology used for compressed or streamed video. These files are most often encountered in older software, archived downloads, and recordings exported by applications that used Vivo codecs.
VIV is not a universally supported container: the extension alone does not guarantee that FFmpeg, VLC, or a current editor can decode the underlying video. A conversion tool must recognize both the VIV container and its codec.
What the MJPG format is
MJPG normally means Motion JPEG: a video made from a sequence of independent JPEG-compressed frames. Each frame can be decoded separately, so MJPG is useful for editing, frame extraction, inspection, and hardware or software that does not support interframe codecs.
MJPG requires more storage than H.264 or H.265 at comparable visual quality, but it avoids dependencies between frames and is widely supported. Some programs use .mjpg for an elementary Motion JPEG stream; others expect MJPEG video inside an AVI container, commonly saved as .avi.
How to convert VIV to MJPG
The simplest option is the converter on 101convert.com: upload the .viv file, select MJPG as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file. No desktop installation is required. If the service reports that the file cannot be decoded, the VIV file may use a legacy codec that needs its original playback software.
For a locally readable VIV file, FFmpeg can re-encode the video to Motion JPEG:
ffmpeg -i input.viv -c:v mjpeg -q:v 3 -an output.mjpg
-q:v 3 selects high visual quality; values around 2–5 are typical, and lower values create larger files. The -an option removes audio because a raw MJPG stream generally does not provide a standard audio track.
For broader player and editor compatibility, put the MJPEG stream in an AVI container:
ffmpeg -i input.viv -c:v mjpeg -q:v 3 -c:a pcm_s16le output.avi
This command preserves decoded audio when the source contains a compatible audio track. Use -an instead of the audio option if audio is unnecessary or causes an encoding error.
Quality and compatibility limits
Re-encoding a VIV file to MJPG cannot restore detail already lost through the original compression. Test the converted file after export, because some VIV variants are not supported by current decoders and may require opening the source in the software that created it before exporting to an intermediate format.
MJPG files are usually much larger than the original VIV file. If a program accepts an AVI file, output.avi with MJPEG video is generally more compatible than a raw output.mjpg stream; if the receiving device explicitly requires the .mjpg extension, use the raw-stream command instead.
