What the VIV format is
In the Video category, .viv usually identifies a proprietary VivoActive video file created by Vivo Software's VivoActive Encoder and related early internet-video tools. These files were used for compressed web playback in the late 1990s and early 2000s and are now most often found in old software archives, downloaded media collections, or legacy websites.
VIV is not a general container such as AVI or MP4. Its video and audio streams use obsolete Vivo codecs, so current players may identify the file incorrectly or refuse to decode it. Renaming .viv to .m2t does not convert the streams.
What the M2T format is
M2T is an MPEG-2 transport stream, generally containing MPEG-2 video and MPEG audio or AC-3 audio. The extension is strongly associated with HDV camcorder recordings, although an M2T file can also contain other MPEG-2 transport-stream profiles.
M2T is useful when an editor, authoring program, broadcast tool, or older HDV device specifically expects MPEG-2 transport-stream input. It is less suitable than MP4 for small web files because MPEG-2 normally produces larger files at comparable visual quality.
How to convert VIV to M2T
Using FFmpeg
First install a current FFmpeg build and make a backup of the original file. Test whether the build can decode the Vivo stream with:
ffmpeg -i input.viv
If FFmpeg recognizes the file and reports a video stream, convert it with:
ffmpeg -i input.viv -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c:v mpeg2video -q:v 3 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a mp2 -b:a 192k -f mpegts output.m2t
-c:v mpeg2video creates MPEG-2 video, -c:a mp2 creates MPEG audio, and -f mpegts selects the transport-stream container. The optional audio mapping allows conversion to succeed when the VIV file contains no audio.
Check the result with:
ffprobe output.m2t
The report should show an MPEG-2 video stream and an MPEG audio stream when audio was present in the source. If the target application requires HDV rather than a general MPEG-2 transport stream, use that application's required frame size, frame rate, bitrate, audio format, and transport-stream profile; a generically valid M2T file may still be rejected by strict HDV hardware.
Using the online converter
You can convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software: choose the VIV file, select M2T as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file. This is practical when FFmpeg cannot be installed, but very old or damaged VIV files may not decode successfully.
Quality and compatibility limits
The conversion normally decodes the original Vivo stream and re-encodes it as MPEG-2, so it is lossy. It cannot restore detail already discarded by the low-bitrate VIV source, and increasing the M2T bitrate will only enlarge the file rather than recreate missing detail.
Some VIV files use decoder behavior that current FFmpeg builds do not support. If the input probe fails, try another current build first; if it still fails, locate the original VivoActive playback or encoding software and export the file to an intermediate format such as AVI, then convert that file to M2T with FFmpeg. Screen recording should be a last resort because it adds another generation of compression and may lose the original audio.
