Some HDTV receivers, DVRs, and set-top boxes accept recorded video only in a TRP transport-stream file. Converting WMV requires either remuxing compatible streams or transcoding the video and audio to codecs and parameters supported by the target device.
What the WMV format is
WMV (Windows Media Video) is a Microsoft video format usually stored in an Advanced Systems Format (ASF) container with the .wmv extension. It was used by Windows Media Encoder, Windows Movie Maker, older Microsoft software, legacy downloads, screen recordings, email attachments, and archived Windows media libraries.
A WMV file can contain different Windows Media Video codecs, including WMV1, WMV2, or WMV3, together with Windows Media Audio or another audio stream. The extension does not reveal the exact codec, resolution, frame rate, interlacing, or audio format, so inspect the source before selecting output settings. ffprobe input.wmv displays this information.
What the TRP format is
TRP is a file extension used for MPEG transport-stream recordings made by some digital-TV receivers, satellite boxes, DVRs, and media players. A TRP file is generally similar to an .ts file: it multiplexes video, audio, and sometimes service or program data into fixed-size packets designed for broadcast-style transmission and recording.
TRP is not a single device-independent codec specification. Depending on the equipment, it may contain MPEG-2 or H.264 video and MPEG, AAC, or AC-3 audio. Its practical advantage is compatibility with hardware that expects a transport stream; the extension does not improve picture quality or guarantee playback on every TRP-capable device. Supported codecs, profiles, resolutions, frame rates, audio formats, bitrates, packet structure, file size, and naming rules vary by manufacturer.
Convert WMV to TRP online
For a straightforward conversion, use the converter on 101convert.com without installing software. Select the WMV file, choose TRP as the output format, start the conversion, and download the result when processing finishes. This is suitable when the receiving application accepts a standard MPEG transport stream; it cannot guarantee compatibility with a device that requires a proprietary TRP profile or recording structure.
Convert WMV to TRP with FFmpeg
FFmpeg provides control over the container, codecs, bitrate, frame rate, and audio settings. Inspect the input first:
ffprobe -hide_banner input.wmv
If the receiver specifies MPEG-2 video with MP2 audio, create a conventional transport stream with:
ffmpeg -i input.wmv -c:v mpeg2video -pix_fmt yuv420p -b:v 6000k -maxrate 6000k -bufsize 1835008 -c:a mp2 -b:a 192k -ar 48000 -f mpegts output.trp
Replace the video bitrate with the value in the receiver's specification. Older standard-definition equipment may require a fixed size such as 720×576 for PAL or 720×480 for NTSC, a particular frame rate, and interlaced video. Add device-specific scaling or interlacing options only when the manual requires them; unnecessary scaling reduces quality.
If the target explicitly supports H.264 transport streams, use a command such as:
ffmpeg -i input.wmv -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 20 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac -b:a 192k -ar 48000 -f mpegts output.trp
Use AC-3 instead of AAC only when the target requires or supports it:
ffmpeg -i input.wmv -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 20 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a ac3 -b:a 192k -ar 48000 -f mpegts output.trp
A lower CRF value generally preserves more H.264 quality and creates a larger file. Do not choose the H.264 commands merely because the output filename ends in .trp; confirm the device's supported codecs first.
When stream copying can work
If the WMV already contains codecs accepted by the receiver, try remuxing without re-encoding:
ffmpeg -i input.wmv -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c copy -f mpegts output.trp
Stream copying avoids another lossy generation, but it is uncommon for WMV because many WMV video and Windows Media Audio streams are not accepted by DVRs or broadcast equipment. If the receiver rejects the file, transcode to its documented video and audio formats instead.
Quality and compatibility limits
- Transcoding normally decodes and re-encodes the WMV, so it cannot restore detail already lost in the source. Use the highest-quality original and avoid repeated conversions.
- Preserve the source aspect ratio and frame rate unless the target requires a fixed television standard. Incorrect settings can cause stretching, judder, dropped frames, or rejection.
- Check the device manual for supported MPEG-2 or H.264 profiles, maximum resolution and bitrate, progressive or interlaced video, audio channel count, sample rate, maximum file size, and required directory or filename conventions.
- DRM-protected WMV files may not decode, and conversion does not bypass access restrictions.
Verify the resulting container and streams with ffprobe output.trp, then test the file on the intended receiver. The .trp extension alone is not a complete format specification.
