Free online WMV to 3G2 converter

Some older mobile phones, MMS systems, and legacy 3G applications require video in the 3G2 container instead of WMV. Converting the file also changes the video and audio codecs when the original WMV streams are not supported by the target device.

What the WMV format is

WMV is Microsoft's Windows Media Video format, commonly stored with the .wmv extension and paired with Windows Media Audio. Windows Media Encoder, older versions of Windows Movie Maker, Microsoft PowerPoint, and legacy Windows capture software commonly create WMV files.

WMV files use codecs such as WMV7, WMV8, WMV9, or VC-1. They are common in older Windows video libraries, downloaded media, screen recordings, and corporate archives, but many current phones and embedded devices do not decode them directly.

What the 3G2 format is

3G2 is a multimedia container developed for CDMA-based 3G mobile networks and usually has the .3g2 extension. It is related to 3GP and can contain MPEG-4 Part 2 or H.263 video with AAC or AMR audio.

The format is useful when a legacy phone, MMS workflow, or mobile application specifically requests 3G2. Its typical low resolution, modest bitrate, and narrow audio configuration produce small files, although those settings reduce quality compared with the source.

How to convert WMV to 3G2

Using the built-in online converter

The first command preserves more detail and is more suitable for software players. The second targets older handsets that expect low-resolution H.263 video and AMR-NB mono audio; libopencore_amr_nb must be available in the FFmpeg build.

Quality and compatibility limitations

Changing the container alone is not enough when a device cannot decode WMV, so the conversion normally re-encodes both streams. Re-encoding can reduce sharpness and introduce motion artifacts; keep the original WMV as the archival copy.

Match the output dimensions, frame rate, bitrate, and audio sample rate to the receiving device. Legacy 3G2 hardware may reject modern resolutions, stereo audio, variable frame rates, AAC profiles other than AAC-LC, or files containing unsupported metadata.

If the converted file has no sound, verify that the player supports AAC or AMR in 3G2. If playback fails entirely, try H.263 video at a handset-sized resolution with AMR-NB audio, and use a simple filename containing only letters, numbers, hyphens, or underscores.
