Older mobile phones, video handsets, and legacy playback software may require a .3g2 file instead of an AVC/H.264 elementary stream. Converting it also packages the video in a container that can carry compatible audio and metadata for mobile sharing or archival playback.
What the AVC format is
In the Video category, AVC usually means Advanced Video Coding, the H.264 video codec. Files ending in .avc commonly contain a raw H.264 elementary stream rather than a complete container such as MP4; they may hold video only, with no audio, timestamps, subtitles, or general metadata.
Security cameras, screen recorders, video encoders, broadcast tools, and device-specific capture software can produce raw AVC files. Some applications also use AVC informally for H.264 video stored inside MP4, MKV, or another container. Use a media inspector such as FFmpeg's ffprobe to determine which case applies before converting.
What the 3G2 format is
3G2 is the multimedia container associated with 3GPP2 mobile networks and older CDMA phones. It can contain video encoded with MPEG-4 Part 2 or H.263 and audio such as AAC or AMR-NB.
The format is useful when a legacy handset, messaging application, or embedded player specifically expects .3g2. Its older codec and resolution combinations are widely supported by that equipment, but they are less efficient and less capable than current MP4/H.264 workflows.
How to actually convert AVC to 3G2
Using the online converter
You can convert the file for free on the 101convert.com website without installing software. Upload the AVC file, choose 3G2 as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file when processing finishes. This method is practical for ordinary files; use desktop conversion for sensitive footage, large files, or repeatable settings.
Using FFmpeg on a computer
FFmpeg is suitable for raw .avc files and allows the output codec, frame rate, resolution, and audio behavior to be specified. Install FFmpeg, open a terminal in the folder containing the source, and run:
ffmpeg -f h264 -framerate 30 -i input.avc -c:v mpeg4 -q:v 4 -an output.3g2
The -f h264 option tells FFmpeg that the input is a raw H.264 stream. Replace 30 with the recording frame rate; raw AVC normally does not contain reliable timing information. The -an option is appropriate because a raw AVC file usually has no audio. -q:v 4 requests visually good MPEG-4 Part 2 quality; lower values increase quality and file size.
If the source is a container with an audio stream, such as an MP4 file incorrectly named .avc, do not force the raw-H.264 input format:
ffmpeg -i input.avc -c:v mpeg4 -q:v 4 -c:a aac -b:a 96k output.3g2
For an older phone that only accepts small H.263 video, try a conservative profile:
ffmpeg -f h264 -framerate 15 -i input.avc -vf scale=176:144 -c:v h263 -b:v 128k -an output.3g2
Some FFmpeg builds lack an H.263 encoder or reject a particular audio codec. Run ffmpeg -encoders to check available encoders, and omit audio for a video-only source rather than inventing an empty audio stream.
Quality, compatibility, and limitations
Converting H.264 to MPEG-4 Part 2 or H.263 requires decoding and re-encoding, so it is lossy. Keep the original AVC file and avoid repeated conversions. A smaller frame size, lower frame rate, and lower video bitrate may be necessary for an old handset, but each reduces detail or motion quality.
Common legacy 3G2 dimensions include 176×144, 320×240, and 352×288. The source aspect ratio may not match these sizes; scaling directly can stretch the image. Use a scale-and-pad filter when preserving proportions matters. Older players can also reject progressive files with unusual frame rates, variable frame timing, unsupported AAC profiles, or H.264 retained inside the 3G2 container.
Check the converted file on the actual target device. A 3G2 extension alone does not guarantee compatibility: the device must support the selected video codec, audio codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate.
