Older CDMA phones and video applications may require 3G2 instead of the MOV files produced by iPhones, cameras, and editing software. Converting the container and, when necessary, the video and audio codecs makes the clip usable on that hardware or in legacy software.

What the MOV format is

MOV is a multimedia container developed by Apple for QuickTime. It can store video, audio, subtitles, timecode, and metadata using codecs such as H.264, HEVC, ProRes, MPEG-4, AAC, or uncompressed audio.

Apple devices and applications commonly create MOV files, including QuickTime Player, Final Cut Pro, iMovie, and some camera and screen-recording tools. A MOV file may also come from Adobe Premiere Pro or another editor when QuickTime output is selected. The .mov extension identifies the container, not one fixed codec or quality level.

What the 3G2 format is

3G2 is a 3GPP2 multimedia container designed mainly for older CDMA mobile networks and phones. It is closely related to 3GP but was adapted for CDMA-based devices and typically contains H.263 or MPEG-4 Part 2 video with AMR-NB or AAC audio.

3G2 files are small and suitable for limited mobile storage, bandwidth, and processing power. They are useful when a legacy phone, messaging system, or application explicitly accepts .3g2; modern smartphones and media players usually support MP4 more reliably.

How to convert MOV to 3G2

Using FFmpeg

FFmpeg is appropriate when you need a repeatable desktop conversion or control over codecs, resolution, bitrate, and frame rate.

  1. Install FFmpeg and place the source file in a convenient folder.
  2. Open a terminal or command prompt in that folder.
  3. Run this broadly compatible conversion:

ffmpeg -i input.mov -c:v mpeg4 -q:v 5 -vf "scale=640:-2" -r 25 -c:a aac -b:a 96k -ar 44100 output.3g2

Replace input.mov and output.3g2 with the actual filenames. The command encodes MPEG-4 Part 2 video, limits the width to 640 pixels while preserving the aspect ratio, sets 25 frames per second, and encodes AAC audio. Remove -vf "scale=640:-2" to retain the source dimensions, but older phones may reject large frames.

For a device that specifically requires H.263, use an available H.263 encoder instead:

ffmpeg -i input.mov -c:v h263 -b:v 400k -vf "scale=352:288" -r 15 -c:a aac -b:a 64k output.3g2

Run ffmpeg -encoders to check which video and audio encoders are included in the installed build. Some very old devices require AMR-NB audio rather than AAC; if the target specification names AMR-NB, select an FFmpeg build that provides an AMR-NB encoder and use the required sample rate and bitrate.

Using the online converter

You can convert the file for free on the 101convert.com website without installing software: choose the MOV file, select 3G2 as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file. Check the service's file-size and privacy terms before uploading sensitive footage.

Quality and compatibility considerations

Conversion normally requires re-encoding because a MOV may contain H.264, HEVC, or ProRes, while older 3G2 devices expect lower-resolution MPEG-4 Part 2 or H.263. Re-encoding reduces quality, so keep the original MOV as the archival copy.

Use the target phone's documented maximum resolution, frame rate, video bitrate, audio codec, and file size rather than assuming every 3G2 player supports the same profile. A conservative starting point is 176×144 or 352×288 video at 15 frames per second, with a 200–400 kbit/s video bitrate and 32–64 kbit/s audio, but newer 3G2-capable software may accept higher settings.

If the converted file has no sound, stutters, or fails to open, inspect it with ffprobe output.3g2 and compare its codecs and dimensions with the device requirements. Do not simply rename .mov to .3g2; changing the extension does not change the container or its codecs.
