A legacy Windows application, presentation system, or media player may require a .wmv file instead of a MOV file. Converting can satisfy that requirement, but it re-encodes the media and may reduce quality.

What MOV is

MOV is a multimedia container originally developed by Apple for QuickTime. It can hold video, audio, subtitles, timecode, and metadata, using codecs such as H.264, HEVC, ProRes, and AAC. iPhones, cameras, screen-recording applications, QuickTime Player, Final Cut Pro, and other editing software commonly create or export MOV files.

The .mov extension identifies the container, not a specific codec. Two MOV files can therefore have very different quality, size, and compatibility.

What WMV is

WMV is a Microsoft family of video codecs, usually stored in an Advanced Systems Format (ASF) container with a .wmv extension. WMV is supported by Windows Media Player, older Windows applications, some presentation systems, and devices that specifically require Windows Media codecs.

WMV can produce relatively small files at moderate bitrates and remains useful for legacy Windows workflows. It has weaker support in macOS, Linux, mobile devices, web browsers, and newer editing applications than H.264 video in an MP4 container.

How to convert the file

Using FFmpeg

FFmpeg is a free desktop command-line converter for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Open Command Prompt, PowerShell, or Terminal in the folder containing the source file and run:

ffmpeg -i input.mov -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c:v wmv2 -b:v 2500k -c:a wmav2 -b:a 192k output.wmv

This creates a WMV2 video stream and a Windows Media Audio 2 stream. Replace input.mov and output.wmv with the required filenames. Put filenames containing spaces in quotation marks, such as "holiday clip.mov". The -map options select the first video and optional first audio stream instead of attempting to copy unsupported subtitles or additional streams.

The -b:v 2500k setting controls video bitrate: increasing it generally improves quality and increases file size, while reducing it does the opposite. To retain the source resolution and frame rate, omit scaling or frame-rate filters. For a smaller, broadly compatible 1280-pixel-wide output at 30 frames per second, use:

ffmpeg -i input.mov -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -vf scale=1280:-2,fps=30 -c:v wmv2 -b:v 2500k -c:a wmav2 -b:a 192k output.wmv

The -2 calculates an even output height, which is required by many video encoders. FFmpeg does not overwrite an existing output unless -y is added.

Use ffprobe input.mov to inspect the source codecs, dimensions, frame rate, audio channels, and other streams before converting. If the destination application requires a particular WMV codec, resolution, bitrate, or audio format, match those specifications rather than relying on the file extension alone.

Using the built-in converter

Quality and compatibility limits

Most conversions are lossy because the video and usually the audio are decoded and encoded again. Retain the original frame size when possible, choose the highest practical bitrate, and avoid converting the same file repeatedly. Re-encoding cannot restore detail already lost in the source.

HEVC, ProRes, variable-frame-rate video, multichannel audio, unusual pixel formats, and unsupported source streams can cause errors or unexpected results. A WMV output is not automatically compatible with every Windows program; older software may require a particular WMV codec or audio configuration.

If the receiving program does not explicitly require WMV, H.264 video in an MP4 container is generally more suitable for modern phones, browsers, operating systems, and editing applications.
