Free online OGM to WMV converter

Some older Windows applications, presentation systems, and media players accept WMV but do not read OGM files. Converting the video creates a WMV container with Windows-compatible video and audio codecs for playback, editing, or sharing.

What the OGM format is

OGM, or Ogg Media, is an older multimedia container based on Ogg. It can hold video streams such as Xvid or DivX, Vorbis audio, multiple audio tracks, and sometimes embedded subtitles or chapter information.

OGM files were commonly created with older OGM-capable tools such as VirtualDubMod and appeared in archived anime, downloaded video collections, and early computer media libraries. Modern players often support OGM through FFmpeg-based codecs, but hardware players, Windows applications, and video editors may not.

What the WMV format is

WMV usually refers to Microsoft’s Windows Media Video format and may describe either the video codec or a file using the .wmv extension. WMV files commonly contain WMV2, WMV3, or VC-1 video together with WMA audio.

WMV is suited to Windows Media Player, older Windows-based presentation software, some corporate media systems, and devices that specifically require Windows Media files. It can produce relatively small files at moderate bitrates, but it is less broadly supported than MP4 with H.264 video.

How to actually convert OGM to WMV

Upload the OGM file, select WMV as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file when processing finishes. For private or very large videos, a local conversion is preferable because uploading requires transferring the source file to the service.

Convert with FFmpeg

FFmpeg is suitable when the file contains unusual streams or when you need control over codecs, bitrate, and stream selection.

1. Install FFmpeg and place input.ogm in the working folder.
2. Run this command:

ffmpeg -i input.ogm -c:v wmv2 -b:v 2500k -c:a wmav2 -b:a 128k output.wmv

The command decodes the OGM streams and re-encodes them as WMV2 video and WMA audio, which are broadly compatible with older WMV software. Change -b:v 2500k to control video size and quality; the required bitrate depends on the source resolution, frame rate, and motion.

To select a particular video and audio stream from a file containing several tracks, inspect the streams first:

ffmpeg -i input.ogm

Then specify the desired indexes, for example:

ffmpeg -i input.ogm -map 0:0 -map 0:2 -c:v wmv2 -b:v 2500k -c:a wmav2 -b:a 128k output.wmv

Use -map 0:0 and -map 0:2 only after checking the stream listing; indexes differ between files.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Most OGM-to-WMV conversions require re-encoding because OGM commonly contains Xvid, DivX, or another codec that is not appropriate for a WMV container. Re-encoding loses some quality, so avoid a low video bitrate and keep the original OGM as an archive.

FFmpeg may not transfer OGM subtitles or chapters into a standard WMV output. Extract subtitles separately or burn them into the video with a video filter if they must appear on every player. Multiple audio tracks also require explicit -map options and may not be supported by the target device.

If the target software accepts MP4, H.264 video in an MP4 container is usually more compatible than WMV. Use WMV when the receiving application or device specifically requires it.
