Free online OGM to MJPG converter

Legacy video archives in OGM format may not open in editors, cameras, or playback systems that expect Motion JPEG. Converting the video to MJPG provides frame-based JPEG compression, but a raw MJPG stream normally cannot retain the original audio or subtitles.

What the OGM format is

OGM, or Ogg Media, is an older multimedia container based on Ogg. It commonly stores Xvid or DivX video with Vorbis audio, although Theora and other codecs are also possible. OGM files were used for downloaded video, anime releases, and archived clips, particularly before Matroska became more common.

OGM files were often created with older versions of VirtualDubMod, Ogg muxing utilities, and similar Windows video tools. VLC, MPC-HC, FFmpeg, and other media applications can usually read them, but newer editors, hardware players, and browser-based workflows may reject the container or one of its embedded codecs.

What the MJPG format is

MJPG, also called Motion JPEG or MJPEG, stores video as a sequence of independently compressed JPEG frames. Unlike OGM, it describes a video encoding method rather than a general-purpose container; a file with an .mjpg extension is often a raw MJPEG stream, while MJPEG video is also frequently stored in AVI or MOV containers.

Each frame can be decoded without referencing adjacent frames, which makes MJPG useful for basic editing, frame extraction, video capture, industrial cameras, and devices that support JPEG-based video. This structure allows accurate frame cuts and simple decoding, but it usually produces much larger files than modern inter-frame codecs such as H.264 or H.265.

How to convert OGM to MJPG

For a local conversion, FFmpeg is the most controllable option. It runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux. First inspect the source streams:

To create a raw MJPEG file without audio, run:

ffmpeg -i input.ogm -map 0:v:0 -c:v mjpeg -q:v 3 -an -f mjpeg output.mjpg

-map 0:v:0 selects the first video stream, -c:v mjpeg performs the codec conversion, and -q:v 3 requests high JPEG quality. FFmpeg's quality scale is encoder-dependent; lower values generally mean better quality and larger output. Use values such as 5 to 8 when reducing file size is more important than retaining fine detail.

To retain audio, create an AVI file containing MJPEG video and uncompressed PCM audio instead of a raw .mjpg stream:

ffmpeg -i input.ogm -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c:v mjpeg -q:v 3 -c:a pcm_s16le output.avi

This AVI uses MJPEG video but is not a raw MJPG file. The optional audio mapping prevents failure when the OGM has no audio stream. Subtitles are not preserved by the raw MJPEG command and normally require separate export or burning into the video before conversion.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

This conversion requires re-encoding the OGM video because OGM codecs such as Theora, Xvid, or DivX are not MJPEG. The result can lose detail and will usually be larger than the source. Increase the JPEG quality setting when text, animation lines, or fine motion must remain clear; test the resulting file on the target device because MJPEG implementations differ in supported frame rates, resolutions, pixel formats, and JPEG quality ranges.

Raw MJPG commonly carries no audio, duration metadata, or subtitles. If synchronized sound or broad media-player compatibility is required, an AVI container with MJPEG video and PCM audio is generally more suitable than an elementary .mjpg file.
