OGM files often contain older video and Vorbis audio that current televisions, DVRs, and set-top boxes do not accept. Converting the container and, when necessary, its codecs to a TRP-compatible MPEG transport stream makes the recording usable on hardware that specifically expects the .trp extension.

What the OGM format is

OGM, or Ogg Media, is a multimedia container based on Ogg. It was commonly used for video encoded with MPEG-4 Part 2 codecs such as DivX or Xvid, Vorbis audio, and optional subtitle streams.

OGM files were frequently created with VirtualDubMod, OggMux, and older command-line multimedia tools. VLC, MPlayer, and other software from the same era commonly played them. The format is now uncommon because Matroska and MP4 provide broader codec and device support.

The .ogm extension identifies the container, not a single video codec. Inspect the streams before converting because the output settings depend on the source video codec, audio codec, resolution, frame rate, and subtitle tracks.

What the TRP format is

TRP is commonly an MPEG transport stream stored with a .trp extension. Digital video recorders, satellite receivers, cable boxes, and some televisions use it for recordings or streamed broadcast content. The underlying stream usually contains 188-byte MPEG-TS packets, program tables, timestamps, and one or more audio and video streams.

TRP has no universal codec profile. Some devices accept MPEG-2 video with MP2 audio, while others accept H.264 video with AAC or AC-3 audio. Certain recorders also use proprietary naming, indexing, encryption, or filesystem rules, so a file with the correct extension may still be rejected.

How to actually convert OGM to TRP

Using the built-in online converter

You can convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software: upload the OGM file, select TRP as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file. This is suitable when the target device accepts a standard MPEG transport stream. Large files, unusual codecs, subtitles, and device-specific TRP requirements may require desktop conversion instead.

Using FFmpeg on a computer

FFmpeg is the most controllable option. First inspect the source:

ffprobe -hide_banner "input.ogm"

If the destination device accepts the original codecs inside MPEG-TS, try remuxing without quality loss:

ffmpeg -i "input.ogm" -map 0 -c copy -f mpegts "output.trp"

OGM files often contain Vorbis audio or MPEG-4 Part 2 video, which many TRP devices cannot decode. For broad compatibility, encode MPEG-2 video and MP2 audio:

ffmpeg -i "input.ogm" -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c:v mpeg2video -pix_fmt yuv420p -q:v 3 -c:a mp2 -ar 48000 -b:a 192k -f mpegts "output.trp"

This command selects the first video and audio streams, excludes unsupported subtitle tracks, creates a standard MPEG transport stream, and writes it with the TRP extension. Replace the input and output filenames as needed. If the device requires a fixed resolution, frame rate, or bitrate, add settings such as -vf scale=720:576, -r 25, or -b:v 6000k according to its manual.

For a device documented to support H.264 and AAC in TRP, use a device-specific profile instead:

ffmpeg -i "input.ogm" -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 20 -c:a aac -b:a 192k -f mpegts "output.trp"

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

  • Remuxing is lossless, but it only changes the container. It works only when the target device supports every source codec and stream type.
  • Re-encoding MPEG-4 Part 2 video or Vorbis audio to MPEG-2 and MP2 causes generation loss. Lower -q:v values improve MPEG-2 quality but increase file size; retaining the source resolution and frame rate avoids unnecessary scaling artifacts.
  • TRP is an extension used by multiple manufacturers, not a single guaranteed specification. Check the recorder or television manual for accepted video codec, audio codec, resolution, frame rate, maximum bitrate, interlacing, and audio channel layout.
  • OGM subtitle streams are not automatically compatible with standalone TRP players. Extract them separately or burn them into the video with FFmpeg if the device cannot display embedded subtitles.
  • A device may require its own recording directory, filename pattern, index file, or encryption. A correctly encoded standard MPEG-TS file cannot satisfy those proprietary requirements by itself.
