DVD recorders store video in VRO files, while some DVRs, set-top boxes, and editing applications expect MPEG transport-stream data with a TRP extension. Converting the container lets you move a DVD-VR recording to hardware or software that does not accept VRO.
What the VRO format is
VRO is the video container used by the DVD-VR recording mode. DVD recorders commonly create files such as VR_MOVIE.VRO on DVD-RAM, DVD-RW, or DVD-R media. The file normally contains MPEG-2 program-stream video with MPEG audio or AC-3 audio, plus DVD-VR navigation and recording metadata stored in related files.
You encounter VRO files when copying recordings from a recorder disc, especially discs made by Panasonic, Sony, Toshiba, and similar DVD-VR equipment. A VRO file can contain several recordings, and its associated navigation data may not be understood by ordinary media players.
What the TRP format is
TRP is a filename extension commonly used for MPEG transport-stream video from digital video recorders, satellite receivers, set-top boxes, and some HDTV capture devices. A TRP file can multiplex video, audio, subtitles, and other streams in transport-stream packets.
Transport streams are useful for broadcast-style delivery and hardware playback because they tolerate packet loss better than a program stream and can carry multiple elementary streams. The .trp extension is not a single tightly defined codec profile, so a particular device may require MPEG-2 video, H.264 video, MP2 audio, AC-3 audio, a specific resolution, or a particular bitrate.
How to actually convert VRO to TRP
Using FFmpeg without re-encoding
FFmpeg is the most practical desktop option when the source contains standard MPEG-2 and compatible audio. Copy the VRO file from the disc to a local drive, then run:
ffmpeg -i "recording.VRO" -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? -c copy -f mpegts "recording.trp"
-c copy remuxes the existing streams instead of decoding and re-encoding them, so the conversion does not reduce quality. -map 0:a? includes available audio without failing when FFmpeg cannot identify an audio stream. Open the result in a player such as VLC and verify both picture and audio before deleting the source.
If FFmpeg cannot identify the VRO by its extension, make a working copy with an MPEG-style extension and retry:
ffmpeg -i "recording.mpg" -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? -c copy -f mpegts "recording.trp"
Use the original file if this is unnecessary; renaming changes only the name, not the data.
When stream copying is not accepted
If the target device rejects the copied streams, transcode to a more widely supported MPEG-2 transport stream:
ffmpeg -i "recording.VRO" -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? -c:v mpeg2video -q:v 3 -c:a mp2 -b:a 192k -f mpegts "recording.trp"
This fallback is slower and introduces generation loss, but MPEG-2 video with MP2 audio is accepted by many older broadcast-oriented devices. Adjust the video standard and frame size if the destination requires NTSC or PAL-specific settings.
Using the online converter
On 101convert.com, select the video converter, upload the VRO file, choose TRP as the output format, and download the result. This option runs in a browser and does not require installed software; upload limits, processing time, and support for unusual DVD-VR recordings can vary.
Quality and compatibility limits
Remuxing preserves the original MPEG-2 quality, but it does not preserve every DVD-VR feature. Chapter marks, title boundaries, delete markers, thumbnails, and recorder navigation data may be lost because they belong to the DVD-VR structure rather than the MPEG transport stream.
A VRO file may contain multiple recordings or padding between titles. If the output includes unwanted material, extract each title separately before creating the TRP file. Finalize or properly mount the disc before copying when the recorder requires its navigation files to be updated. The TRP extension alone does not guarantee playback: test the resulting stream on the intended DVR or player, and transcode only when its required codecs or dimensions differ from the source.
