What the VRO format is
.VRO is the video container used by the DVD-VR recording format. DVD recorders and DVD camcorders commonly create a file such as VR_MOVIE.VRO on a DVD-RAM, DVD-RW, or DVD+RW disc. The video is normally MPEG-2, with audio stored as MPEG audio, AC-3, or another DVD-compatible stream.
A VRO file can contain several recordings in one program stream. The associated DVD-VR disc may also include .IFO control files containing title, chapter, and playback information. Copying only the VRO file can therefore omit the original recording order, edit marks, menus, or chapter metadata.
What the M2TS format is
.M2TS is an MPEG-2 transport stream container used by Blu-ray video and AVCHD cameras. It carries packetized video, audio, timestamps, and sometimes subtitles or other streams in a form suited to disc playback and high-definition camera media.
M2TS is useful when an editor, media server, Blu-ray authoring application, or AVCHD-compatible device requires a transport stream. It is a container, not a codec: an M2TS file can contain MPEG-2 video or H.264 video, with audio such as AC-3, AAC, or MPEG audio depending on the application.
How to convert VRO to M2TS
Using the built-in online converter
- Open the VRO-to-M2TS converter on 101convert.com.
- Upload the
.VROfile copied from the DVD or recorder. - Select
M2TSas the output format and start the conversion. - Download the resulting
.m2tsfile and test its audio, video, and duration in the target application.
This option requires no software installation. If the disc contains multiple recordings, inspect the output and use a separate trim or split operation when individual titles are needed.
Using FFmpeg on a computer
FFmpeg can often remux the MPEG-2 program stream into an MPEG transport stream without re-encoding:
ffmpeg -i input.VRO -map 0 -c copy -f mpegts output.m2ts
The -c copy option preserves the original compressed video and audio, so processing is fast and causes no generational quality loss. If FFmpeg does not identify the extension correctly, force the MPEG program-stream input format:
ffmpeg -f mpeg -i input.VRO -map 0 -c copy -f mpegts output.m2ts
For a file intended for an AVCHD or Blu-ray workflow that rejects the original codecs, re-encode instead:
ffmpeg -i input.VRO -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 18 -c:a ac3 -b:a 192k -f mpegts output.m2ts
Use -map 0:v:0 and -map 0:a:0 when the VRO contains multiple streams and only the first video and audio streams are wanted. Replace input.VRO with the actual filename; filenames containing spaces need quotation marks.
Quality, compatibility, and limitations
Remuxing with stream copying does not improve the DVD recording's resolution or bitrate. DVD-VR video is normally standard-definition MPEG-2, so an M2TS output made with -c copy remains standard definition. Re-encoding to H.264 can reduce file size, but it cannot restore detail lost during the original recording.
Some players accept an M2TS extension only when the transport stream uses specific codecs, stream IDs, or Blu-ray-compatible parameters. If a remuxed file has no sound, seeking problems, or compatibility errors, re-encode the audio to AC-3 and verify that the destination application supports the selected video codec.
VRO-to-M2TS conversion normally does not preserve DVD menus, recorder-specific edit decisions, or all DVD-VR chapter metadata. Keep the original disc and its .IFO files if those navigation features or the unmodified recording are required.
