Devices and editing programs designed for Blu-ray transport streams may reject HD DVD .evo files, so converting them produces an .m2ts file that those tools can import. The conversion is usually a remux when the original video and audio codecs are already supported.
What the EVO format is
In the Video category, EVO means the Enhanced VOB container used by HD DVD. It commonly appears in an HD DVD disc's HVDVD_TS directory and stores high-definition MPEG-2, VC-1, or H.264 video together with formats such as AC-3, E-AC-3, DTS, or Dolby TrueHD audio, plus transport and presentation metadata.
Commercial HD DVD releases, HD DVD authoring applications, disc backup tools, and some optical-media extraction programs create or expose EVO files. You may encounter several numbered files such as 001.evo and 002.evo; these can be segments of one title rather than independent videos. Copy-protected discs may require authorized decryption before any converter can read the content.
What the M2TS format is
M2TS is a Blu-ray transport-stream container based on MPEG-2 Transport Stream. Blu-ray discs store playlists and titles as M2TS files under the BDMV/STREAM directory, and many Blu-ray authoring tools, media servers, and video editors recognize it.
Compared with a normal .ts file, M2TS uses 192-byte packets with an additional arrival-time field, which helps Blu-ray playback maintain timing. It is suitable for retaining high-definition streams without re-encoding, but it is not inherently smaller than EVO and does not automatically improve image or audio quality.
How to convert EVO to M2TS
Using FFmpeg
FFmpeg is the most controllable desktop option. Confirm that your build includes EVO demuxing, then inspect the streams:
ffprobe input.evo
For a compatible source, remux the first video and audio streams without quality loss:
ffmpeg -i input.evo -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c copy -mpegts_m2ts_mode 1 output.m2ts
The -map options prevent unwanted subtitles, menus, or extra audio tracks from being copied. Replace 0:a:0? with a specific audio stream selected from the ffprobe output, or add additional -map 0:a:N options for more tracks. If your FFmpeg build does not recognize -mpegts_m2ts_mode, create a standard transport stream with -f mpegts; some applications accept that file after renaming it to .m2ts, but it is not a strict Blu-ray-style M2TS file.
When remuxing fails
Use transcoding only when FFmpeg cannot decode the EVO streams, the codecs are unsuitable for the target application, or timestamps cause playback errors:
ffmpeg -i input.evo -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 18 -c:a ac3 -b:a 640k -mpegts_m2ts_mode 1 output.m2ts
-crf 18 is a high-quality H.264 setting, not a universal requirement; use a higher CRF for a smaller file and a lower CRF for less compression. Transcoding takes substantially longer and permanently changes the original video.
Using the built-in online converter
You can convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software. Upload the EVO file, choose M2TS as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file. Large HD DVD sources may exceed upload limits or take longer to process.
Quality, compatibility, and limitations
- Remuxing preserves quality:
-c copychanges the container and timestamps but does not re-encode the streams. It is the preferred method when the target software accepts the original codecs. - Codec support varies: an M2TS extension does not make every stream Blu-ray-compliant. A player may reject VC-1, TrueHD, unusual frame rates, or unsupported subtitle and metadata streams even when the file opens elsewhere.
- Check segmented EVO files: converting only
001.evomay omit later program content. Join compatible segments before remuxing, or process the title through software that understands the HD DVD playlist and segment structure. - Menus are not preserved: a standalone M2TS file contains selected media streams, not the original HD DVD menus, navigation, or chapter system. Create a Blu-ray structure separately if disc authoring is required.
- Protect the source: keep the original EVO files until the M2TS has been tested for complete duration, audio-track selection, synchronization, and seeking.
