HD DVD backups and extracted HD DVD video often use EVO files, while many older media players and editing tools expect DivX video in an AVI-style container. Converting the file can also reduce its resolution and bitrate for smaller storage or broader device compatibility.

What the EVO format is

EVO is the extension used for HD DVD video object files, usually stored in the HVDVD_TS directory on an HD DVD. An EVO file is a container for one or more high-definition video, audio, subtitle, and navigation streams; common codecs include MPEG-2, VC-1, and H.264.

HD DVD authoring systems created EVO files, and disc-extraction software can produce them when an HD DVD is backed up. Some commercial discs protect their content with AACS encryption. A normal converter cannot process an encrypted EVO; the input must first be lawfully decrypted or otherwise made accessible.

What the DIVX format is

DivX usually refers to MPEG-4 Part 2 video encoded for the DivX codec family, commonly stored in an AVI-compatible container. It was widely supported by older standalone DVD players, televisions, portable players, and software that could not decode HD DVD codecs.

DivX offers smaller files than the original HD DVD stream, but it is an older format with lower efficiency than H.264 or HEVC. A file intended for a certified DivX player may need MPEG-4 Part 2 video, MP3 audio, and standard-definition dimensions such as 720×576 or 720×480.

How to convert EVO to DIVX

FFmpeg is the most controllable desktop option because it can decode the supported streams inside an EVO and write MPEG-4 Part 2 video with a DivX-compatible codec tag.

  1. Install a current FFmpeg build and place the source file in a folder with a short filename such as input.evo.
  2. Inspect the streams before converting:

ffprobe -hide_banner input.evo

  1. Convert the first video and audio streams to an AVI-style DivX file:

ffmpeg -i input.evo -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -c:v mpeg4 -vtag DX50 -q:v 4 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 192k -f avi output.divx

-q:v 4 uses quality-based video encoding; lower values produce higher quality and larger files. For an older player that cannot handle the EVO's HD dimensions, add a compatible scale filter, for example:

ffmpeg -i input.evo -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -vf "scale=720:576:force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease,pad=720:576:(ow-iw)/2:(oh-ih)/2" -c:v mpeg4 -vtag DX50 -q:v 4 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 192k -f avi output.divx

Use 720×480 instead of 720×576 for an NTSC-oriented device. If the EVO contains several audio tracks, inspect the ffprobe output and select another stream with a map such as -map 0:a:1. Subtitles normally require separate extraction or burning into the video because basic DivX AVI playback does not reliably support HD DVD subtitle streams.

For a no-installation conversion, the 101convert.com website can convert the file for free when the EVO is supported and is not encrypted. Uploading a large HD DVD file can be slow, and the service may impose file-size or codec restrictions.

Quality and compatibility limitations

This conversion is lossy twice if the EVO is decoded and then encoded as DivX: the original HD DVD compression is decoded, and MPEG-4 Part 2 compression is applied again. Keep the original EVO as an archive and use a higher quality setting when preserving detail matters.

DivX AVI does not preserve every HD DVD feature. Menus, chapters, multiple angles, advanced subtitles, lossless audio, and protected content may be lost. Confirm the result with ffprobe output.divx or a target-player test, because some devices require the DIVX codec tag rather than DX50, reject HD resolutions, or accept only specific MP3 sampling rates.
