Programs that process individual JPEG-compressed video frames may require MJPG instead of an HD DVD EVO file. Converting is also useful when extracting HD DVD footage for frame-based editing, legacy hardware, or applications that cannot read EVO containers.

What the EVO format is

EVO is the video container used by HD DVD discs and HD DVD authoring systems such as Sonic Scenarist. It normally stores MPEG-2 video together with Dolby Digital, DTS, or other audio streams, subtitles, menus, and disc-navigation data. You usually encounter EVO files in an extracted HVDVD_TS directory or in archival copies of commercial and authored HD DVD content.

Commercial EVO files may be protected with AACS encryption. A converter can process only an unencrypted file or content that you are legally permitted to decrypt; changing the filename extension does not remove protection.

What the MJPG format is

MJPG, or Motion JPEG, stores video as a sequence of JPEG-compressed frames. Unlike MPEG-2, each frame is independently decodable, which makes MJPG useful for frame-accurate editing, computer-vision software, capture systems, and older devices that support JPEG hardware.

MJPG is often stored in an AVI container, while a file ending in .mjpg commonly contains a raw MJPEG video stream. It is easy to decode and seek through, but it normally produces much larger files than the original MPEG-2 video and remains lossy because every frame is JPEG-compressed.

How to convert EVO to MJPG

Using 101convert.com

  1. Open the EVO to MJPG converter on 101convert.com; the conversion is free and does not require installed software.
  2. Select the unencrypted .evo file.
  3. Choose MJPG as the output format and start the conversion.
  4. Download the resulting .mjpg file when processing finishes.

This method is suitable when the source is readable by the converter and you need a raw MJPEG stream. Audio, subtitles, disc menus, and chapter navigation are not part of a raw MJPG output.

Using FFmpeg

FFmpeg can read most unencrypted EVO files and encode the first video stream as raw MJPEG:

ffmpeg -i input.evo -map 0:v:0 -c:v mjpeg -q:v 3 -an -f mjpeg output.mjpg

The -map 0:v:0 option selects the first video stream, -an removes audio because raw MJPG has no general-purpose audio track, and -q:v 3 requests high MJPEG quality. In FFmpeg's scale, lower quality values produce larger, better-quality frames; test values from 2 to 5 against the required file size.

If the target application accepts an AVI file containing MJPEG and audio, use:

ffmpeg -i input.evo -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c:v mjpeg -q:v 3 -c:a pcm_s16le output.avi

AVI is a container rather than the MJPG codec itself, so verify that the receiving application requires a raw .mjpg stream or an AVI file with an MJPEG video track.

Quality and compatibility limitations

The EVO-to-MJPG process decodes MPEG-2 and recompresses every frame as JPEG; it cannot be lossless. Keep the source resolution and frame rate unless the destination requires different values, and avoid repeated MJPEG re-encoding.

Raw MJPG commonly has no audio, metadata, subtitles, chapters, or HD DVD navigation. If those elements must remain available, keep the original EVO or produce a container such as AVI separately. Some programs identify MJPEG only by its codec tag and reject raw .mjpg files; in that case, use the AVI command and confirm that the codec is listed as Motion JPEG.
