Programs and devices that support MPEG-4 video may not open HD DVD's EVO files, so conversion is needed for editing, playback, sharing, or smaller storage. The usual result is an H.264/AAC M4V file that works with Apple-oriented players and many general media applications.

What the EVO format is

EVO is the HD DVD Video Object container used on HD DVD discs and disc backups, commonly inside an HVDVD_TS folder. It stores authored HD video, typically MPEG-2 or VC-1 video with AC-3, E-AC-3, or DTS audio, plus navigation-related content.

HD DVD authoring systems created EVO files; applications such as PowerDVD and WinDVD were among the programs capable of playing the resulting discs or files. EVO files are usually encountered in old HD DVD collections, archival disc images, and extracted HD DVD titles rather than in current camera workflows.

What the M4V format is

M4V is an MPEG-4 container commonly used for H.264 video and AAC audio. Apple devices and software use the extension for many video files, although unprotected M4V files are generally compatible with players that support MP4.

M4V can provide much smaller files than MPEG-2 EVO content at comparable visual quality. It is suitable for phones, tablets, media libraries, video editors, and sharing. Some M4V files from commercial Apple stores use FairPlay DRM; converting a protected file requires authorized playback and is not the same as converting an unprotected EVO.

How to convert EVO to M4V

Using FFmpeg

FFmpeg is the most flexible desktop method because it can decode the common MPEG-2, VC-1, and DVD-era audio streams found in EVO files.

  1. Install FFmpeg and place the EVO file in a working folder.
  2. Inspect the streams with ffmpeg -i input.evo. Identify the main video stream and the desired audio language or track.
  3. Convert the main video and first audio stream with:
ffmpeg -i input.evo -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 20 -c:a aac -b:a 192k -movflags +faststart output.m4v

-crf 20 is a quality setting rather than a fixed bitrate; values around 18–23 are common, with lower values producing larger files. Change -map 0:a:0 to another audio index after inspecting the input. To retain all audio tracks, use -map 0:a?, but this may reduce compatibility with some devices.

Using a desktop graphical converter

HandBrake can be used when it recognizes the EVO file or the extracted title. Open the source, select the main title, choose an H.264 preset such as Fast 1080p30, set the audio codec to AAC, select an output filename ending in .m4v, and start the encode. If HandBrake cannot open the EVO directly, use FFmpeg or extract the playable HD DVD title first.

Using the online converter

You can convert the file on the 101convert.com website for free without installing software. Uploading may be unsuitable for large HD DVD files, confidential material, or EVO files that are encrypted or incomplete.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Re-encoding MPEG-2 or VC-1 video to H.264 always causes some generation loss. Use a lower CRF value or a slower encoder preset when quality matters, and avoid repeated conversions.

An EVO may contain several titles, angles, audio languages, subtitles, or split segments. Converting an individual file can produce only one segment rather than the complete program; process the correct title parts and join them before encoding when necessary. Commercial HD DVD encryption, damaged files, and disc navigation structures can prevent direct decoding.

Subtitles are not automatically preserved as selectable tracks in every M4V player. Extract or render them during encoding if they are required. For broad device compatibility, H.264 video with AAC-LC audio is safer than retaining AC-3 or using VC-1.
