Programs that author standard DVD-Video discs often require VOB files, while EVO files usually come from HD DVD discs or backups. Converting the file is useful when an older DVD player, DVD authoring application, or editing workflow cannot open the HD DVD container directly.

What the EVO format is

EVO is the HD DVD-Video Object container used by HD DVD titles. It is commonly found in an HVDVD_TS folder on HD DVD discs, disc images, and backups created by HD DVD authoring software.

An EVO file can contain high-definition MPEG-2, VC-1, or H.264 video, together with Dolby Digital, DTS, or other audio streams, subtitles, and multiple program streams. Commercial HD DVD files may also be protected by AACS; a normal converter cannot process an encrypted file until it has been legally decrypted or copied in an accessible form.

What the VOB format is

VOB is the main media container used by DVD-Video. DVD authoring software stores VOB files in a VIDEO_TS folder alongside navigation files such as .IFO and backup files such as .BUP.

DVD-Video normally uses MPEG-2 video at 720×480 pixels for NTSC or 720×576 pixels for PAL, with 48 kHz audio. VOB is suitable for DVD players, DVD software, and authoring applications, but it does not preserve HD DVD resolution without either exceeding DVD specifications or producing a nonstandard disc.

How to actually convert EVO to VOB

FFmpeg is the most controllable desktop option. It can decode common EVO streams and transcode them to DVD-compatible MPEG-2 and AC-3 audio.

  1. Install FFmpeg and check the input streams with ffprobe input.evo.
  2. For an NTSC DVD, run ffmpeg -i input.evo -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -target ntsc-dvd output.vob.
  3. For a PAL DVD, use ffmpeg -i input.evo -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -target pal-dvd output.vob.
  4. Open the resulting VOB in a DVD authoring application and create the required VIDEO_TS structure before burning a disc. A standalone VOB file is not a complete DVD-Video title.

The -map 0:v:0 and -map 0:a:0? options select the first video and first available audio stream. Change the stream indexes after reviewing ffprobe if the EVO contains multiple titles, languages, or audio tracks.

For a no-installation conversion, use the free converter on 101convert.com: choose the EVO file, select VOB as the output format, start the conversion, and download the result. Upload limits and supported codecs can vary, so FFmpeg is preferable for large files or stream selection.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Most EVO sources are high-definition, while DVD-Video is standard-definition. The conversion therefore requires downscaling and usually re-encoding; it cannot preserve the original HD detail. The ntsc-dvd and pal-dvd presets also choose different frame sizes and frame rates, so select the standard required by the intended player.

Do not simply rename .evo to .vob. The containers and video constraints are different, and a renamed file may fail in DVD software. Converting only the video and audio does not transfer HD DVD menus, chapters, interactive features, or subtitles automatically. DVD authoring must recreate menus and navigation, and bitmap or text subtitles may need separate import.

If the EVO already contains DVD-compatible MPEG-2 video and audio, stream copying can avoid another generation of quality loss, but HD DVD sources commonly use incompatible resolutions or codecs. Test compatibility with ffprobe before attempting a copy-only workflow.
