Some DVD players, authoring applications, and older editing workflows require DVD-Video VOB files instead of OGM containers. Converting is useful when you need to author a playable DVD, preserve MPEG-2 DVD compatibility, or move video from an older Ogg-based collection.

What the OGM format is

OGM, or Ogg Media, is an older container based on Ogg that can hold video, audio, and subtitle streams. It commonly contains Xvid or DivX video with Vorbis audio and was created by tools such as VirtualDubMod, MEncoder, and older conversion utilities.

OGM files are most often encountered in older downloaded video collections, archived TV episodes, and projects made before Matroska became common. The .ogm extension identifies the container, not a single codec; the streams must be decoded and usually re-encoded for DVD-Video output.

What the VOB format is

VOB is the DVD-Video container used inside a disc's VIDEO_TS folder. It normally contains MPEG-2 video, DVD-compatible audio such as AC-3 or MPEG audio, subtitles, and navigation data split into files such as VTS_01_1.VOB.

VOB is appropriate for a physical DVD or software that expects DVD-Video structure. A standalone file with a .vob extension is not necessarily a complete playable DVD: menus, titles, navigation tables, and the accompanying .IFO and .BUP files are produced during DVD authoring.

How to actually convert OGM to VOB

Using 101convert

You can convert the file on the 101convert.com website for free without installing software. Select the Video converter, upload the .ogm file, choose VOB as the output format, start the conversion, and download the result. This is suitable for a straightforward file conversion; use DVD authoring software afterward if the result must be burned as a standards-compliant DVD-Video disc.

Using FFmpeg and DVD authoring tools

FFmpeg can decode OGM and create DVD-compatible MPEG-2 video and AC-3 audio. First inspect the streams:

ffprobe input.ogm

For a PAL source, create an intermediate DVD MPEG program stream with:

ffmpeg -i input.ogm -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -target pal-dvd -c:v mpeg2video -b:v 6000k -maxrate 8000k -bufsize 1835k -c:a ac3 -b:a 192k output.mpg

For an NTSC source, replace -target pal-dvd with -target ntsc-dvd. Choose the target standard to match the intended DVD player and television system. If the OGM contains several audio or subtitle streams, inspect the stream indexes with ffprobe and add the required -map options.

Author the MPEG stream with DVDStyler, or with the command-line dvdauthor utility:

dvdauthor -o dvd -t output.mpg
dvdauthor -o dvd -T

This creates a DVD structure containing VOB, IFO, and BUP files under dvd/VIDEO_TS. For an ISO image, use a DVD image tool such as:

genisoimage -dvd-video -o output.iso dvd

DVDStyler can perform the authoring step through File → New → Add title → Burn; import the OGM directly if the installed FFmpeg backend accepts its codecs, or import the intermediate output.mpg when direct import fails.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Conversion from OGM to DVD-compatible VOB usually involves re-encoding because OGM commonly uses codecs and frame sizes outside the DVD specification. Re-encoding reduces quality; avoid repeated conversions and use the highest practical DVD bitrate while keeping the complete title within the disc capacity.

DVD-Video requires fixed video characteristics: MPEG-2 video, supported PAL or NTSC frame rates, DVD-compliant frame sizes, and compatible audio. FFmpeg's -target pal-dvd and -target ntsc-dvd presets set many of these values, but unusual aspect ratios, variable frame rates, damaged timestamps, and unsupported audio streams can still require manual filtering or stream selection.

DVD capacity is approximately 4.7 GB for a single-layer disc and 8.5 GB for a dual-layer disc. A VOB produced by a converter may play in VLC or another media player but fail in a standalone DVD player unless it belongs to a properly authored VIDEO_TS structure.
