Older media players, editing applications, and hardware devices may not open OGM containers but can play AVI files containing Xvid video. Converting requires extracting the OGM streams and normally re-encoding the video with the Xvid codec, then storing it in an AVI container.

What the OGM format is

OGM, or Ogg Media, is a multimedia container based on Ogg. It was used for video files containing MPEG-4 Part 2 codecs such as Xvid or DivX, Ogg Vorbis audio, multiple audio tracks, subtitles, and chapter information. OGM files were commonly created with older versions of VirtualDubMod, OggMux, and related Ogg Media tools, and are often encountered in older video archives and anime releases.

The .ogm extension identifies the container, not necessarily the video codec. An OGM file may already contain Xvid video, but its Ogg-based container or audio streams can still be incompatible with a target player.

What the Xvid format is

Xvid is an implementation of the MPEG-4 Part 2 Advanced Simple Profile video codec; it is not a container format. The usual conversion target is an AVI file with Xvid-encoded video, commonly using MP3 audio because AVI-era devices and editors support that combination widely.

Xvid can produce relatively small files at moderate quality and works with many older standalone DVD players, televisions, media players, and Windows applications. It is useful when the target device does not support OGM, Ogg Vorbis, or newer codecs such as H.264 and H.265.

How to convert OGM to Xvid

Using FFmpeg

Install an FFmpeg build that includes libxvid and libmp3lame, then inspect the input streams:

ffprobe input.ogm

Convert the first video stream and first audio stream to an AVI file:

ffmpeg -i input.ogm -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c:v libxvid -b:v 1500k -vf format=yuv420p -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 128k output.avi

Change 1500k to suit the source resolution and desired size. A 640×480 or 720×576 source commonly works at roughly 1000–2000 kb/s; using a higher bitrate cannot restore detail already missing from the OGM file.

If the source already contains Xvid video and only the container must change, try stream copying first:

ffmpeg -i input.ogm -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c copy output.avi

Stream copying avoids quality loss, but it can fail when the audio codec is unsuitable for AVI. In that case, copy the video and transcode only the audio:

ffmpeg -i input.ogm -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c:v copy -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 128k output.avi

Using Avidemux

Open the file in Avidemux with File → Open. Set Video Output to MPEG-4 ASP (Xvid4) or another Xvid encoder, set Audio Output to MP3 (lame), and choose Output Format → AVI Muxer. Use Video Output → Configure to select a bitrate or quality-based mode, then save through File → Save with an .avi filename.

For a free conversion without installing desktop software, upload the file to the built-in converter on 101convert.com, choose Xvid as the output, and download the generated file. Large files, multiple streams, and unusual OGM codecs may be handled more predictably with FFmpeg.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Re-encoding Xvid is lossy. Do not decode and re-encode if the OGM already has Xvid video and a compatible stream-copy operation produces a valid AVI file. Converting OGM to Xvid cannot improve resolution, sharpness, or frame rate.

AVI has weaker support for OGM features. Multiple audio tracks, embedded subtitles, chapters, and attachments may be lost unless they are explicitly mapped and stored separately. The commands above select only the first video and first audio stream; use additional -map options for other tracks.

Some older Xvid devices require MPEG-4 Part 2 Simple Profile, constant frame rate, 4:3 or 16:9 dimensions, and no unusual pixel format. If playback fails, avoid variable frame rate output, use even dimensions, keep format=yuv420p, and select a device-compatible resolution and bitrate.
