A video editor or AVCHD-compatible device may require an MTS file instead of an older OGM container. Converting is usually necessary when the source uses OGM-era codecs such as Xvid or Vorbis that the target software cannot import.

What the OGM format is

OGM, or Ogg Media, is a multimedia container based on Ogg. It was commonly used in the 2000s for video files containing Xvid or DivX video, Vorbis audio, and selectable subtitle tracks. Programs such as VirtualDubMod, older encoding tools, and general-purpose media players created or handled OGM files.

OGM is less common in current editing software and hardware because support for its container and typical codecs is limited. The .ogm extension identifies the container, not a single video codec, so inspect the file before converting if you need to preserve several audio or subtitle streams.

What the MTS format is

MTS is an MPEG-2 Transport Stream container used primarily by AVCHD camcorders and Blu-ray-related workflows. Typical MTS files contain H.264/AVC video with AC-3 or LPCM audio, although the container itself can carry other MPEG transport-stream codecs.

MTS supports time-based transport data, high-definition video, and multiple elementary streams. It is appropriate when a camera archive, NLE, media server, or playback device specifically expects an AVCHD-style .mts file. Changing only the extension does not create a valid MTS file; the streams must be remuxed or transcoded into an MPEG transport stream.

How to convert OGM to MTS

For a local conversion, FFmpeg provides control over codecs, streams, resolution, and bitrate. Install a current FFmpeg build, then inspect the source:

ffmpeg -i input.ogm

For broad AVCHD-style compatibility, transcode the first video and audio streams to H.264 and AC-3:

ffmpeg -i input.ogm -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 18 -pix_fmt yuv420p -profile:v high -level 4.1 -c:a ac3 -b:a 384k -ar 48000 -f mpegts output.mts

-crf 18 gives high visual quality; use a higher value such as 20 or 23 for a smaller file. Replace 0:a:0? with another audio stream index if the required language is not the first one. Add additional -map options to include other streams, but confirm that the destination device supports them.

If the video and audio codecs are already accepted by the destination and only the container needs changing, try a remux first:

ffmpeg -i input.ogm -map 0 -c copy -f mpegts output.mts

Remuxing is fast and does not reduce quality, but it often fails to produce a device-compatible file because OGM sources frequently contain Xvid, DivX, or Vorbis streams that AVCHD hardware does not support.

Convert without installing software

You can convert the file for free on the 101convert.com website: open the converter, select the OGM file, choose MTS as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file. For confidential footage or very large recordings, a local FFmpeg conversion avoids uploading the source.

Quality and compatibility limitations

Transcoding from OGM to H.264 cannot restore detail already lost through the original Xvid or DivX compression. Keep the original OGM as an archive, and use a moderate CRF value rather than repeatedly re-encoding the same material.

An MTS extension alone does not guarantee AVCHD compliance. Some cameras and editors require specific frame rates, H.264 profiles, level limits, audio formats, resolutions, and folder structures such as PRIVATE/AVCHD. A generic FFmpeg MPEG-TS file may play correctly in software while being rejected by a camera or consumer device; use that device's import specification or an AVCHD authoring workflow when hardware compatibility is required.

Text subtitles in OGM are not automatically rendered into the picture by the command above. To make them visible on every player, burn them into the video with a video filter; to retain them as selectable tracks, verify that the target editor supports the subtitle format inside MTS.
