People convert MOD camcorder recordings to MTS when a video editor, Blu-ray authoring tool, or AVCHD-compatible device expects an MPEG transport stream instead of the original camera file. The conversion may also standardize footage from older JVC or Panasonic camcorders for editing and storage.

What the MOD format is

In the Video category, MOD is a camcorder video file format based on an MPEG-2 program stream. JVC Everio camcorders and some Panasonic and Canon standard-definition camcorders used .MOD for footage stored on internal drives, memory cards, or DVDs; related camera metadata may be stored in .MOI files.

MOD recordings commonly contain interlaced MPEG-2 video at standard-definition resolutions such as 720×480 or 720×576, with MPEG audio or AC-3 audio. The extension does not always identify the internal stream reliably: some cameras use 16:9 video inside a file whose dimensions appear similar to 4:3 footage, so camera metadata or the picture itself may be needed to confirm the aspect ratio.

What the MTS format is

MTS is an MPEG-2 transport stream commonly used by AVCHD camcorders and Blu-ray-related workflows. It normally contains H.264/AVC video and AC-3 or AAC audio, with support for HD resolutions, interlaced footage, time stamps, and multiple elementary streams.

MTS is useful when an editor or playback device specifically accepts AVCHD-style transport streams. The extension alone does not guarantee a particular codec, resolution, or bitrate; compatibility depends on the video and audio streams inside the container.

How to actually convert MOD to MTS

For a no-install conversion, use the free converter on 101convert.com: upload the .MOD file, choose MTS as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file. Keep the original camera file until the output has been tested in the intended editor or device.

For local processing, FFmpeg gives control over codecs and interlacing:

  1. Install FFmpeg from the official package for your operating system.
  2. Open a terminal in the folder containing the source file.
  3. Run:
ffmpeg -i input.MOD -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 18 -c:a aac -b:a 192k -f mpegts output.MTS

Replace input.MOD and output.MTS with the actual filenames. The command decodes the MPEG-2 source, encodes H.264 video and AAC audio, and writes an MPEG transport stream. A lower CRF value increases quality and file size; values around 18–23 are common for visually high-quality H.264 output.

To preserve the source's original frame size and frame rate, do not add scaling or frame-rate options. If the MOD footage is interlaced and the target software expects progressive video, deinterlace during conversion instead:

ffmpeg -i input.MOD -vf bwdif -c:v libx264 -crf 18 -c:a aac -b:a 192k -f mpegts output.MTS

In a graphical FFmpeg-based application, choose Open video → Export, select H.264 video, AAC audio, MPEG-TS output, and save with the .MTS extension.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

This conversion is normally a transcode, not a lossless extension change: MOD's MPEG-2 video is converted to H.264, so the output can lose detail while requiring less storage. Set a moderate CRF value and avoid repeated conversions. If a device requires AVCHD specifically, verify its permitted H.264 profile, level, frame rate, audio codec, and maximum bitrate; a generic MTS file may still be rejected.

Preserve the original aspect ratio and frame rate. Do not force 16:9 or 4:3 based only on the filename. If the source is interlaced, retain interlacing for an interlaced playback workflow or use a quality deinterlacer such as bwdif for progressive delivery. Camera-only metadata in .MOI files, including recording dates or thumbnails, is generally not carried into the converted MTS file.
