Older JVC Everio and similar camcorders often save MPEG-2 video with a .MOD extension, while some web, Linux, and open-source workflows expect .ogv. Converting it re-encodes the camera footage into an Ogg container with a Theora video stream and usually a Vorbis audio stream.

What the MOD format is

In the Video category, MOD is a camcorder recording format rather than a separate video codec. JVC Everio cameras and some Panasonic camcorders commonly create files containing MPEG-2 program-stream video, typically with MPEG audio or Dolby Digital audio, using filenames such as PRG001.MOD.

The file may be accompanied by .MOI metadata files containing recording dates, thumbnails, or camera information. The video itself can usually be opened by VLC, FFmpeg, and many MPEG-2 editors even when the extension is not recognized; renaming .MOD to .MPG can help older software identify the container, but renaming does not convert the video.

What the OGV format is

OGV is an Ogg video container, most commonly containing Theora video and Vorbis audio. It is supported by FFmpeg, VLC, Firefox-based workflows, and various open-source media tools.

OGV is useful when a project specifically requires Ogg/Theora, when distributing video in an open container, or when working with software that does not accept MPEG-2 camcorder files. It is less suitable than MP4 for modern phones, televisions, and broad hardware playback. Because Theora is usually not compatible with the original MPEG-2 stream, this conversion normally requires re-encoding.

How to actually convert MOD to OGV

You can convert the file for free on 101convert.com without installing software: open the site, choose the video conversion tool, upload the .MOD file, select OGV as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file when processing finishes.

For local batch processing or files that should not be uploaded, FFmpeg provides direct control over codecs and quality. Install FFmpeg, open a terminal in the folder containing the recording, and run:

ffmpeg -i input.MOD -c:v libtheora -q:v 7 -c:a libvorbis -q:a 4 output.ogv

Replace input.MOD with the actual filename. The Theora quality scale runs from 0 to 10; higher values produce better quality and larger files. Values around 6 to 8 are a practical starting range. Vorbis quality 4 is suitable for ordinary camera audio; use 5 or higher when audio quality matters.

To convert every MOD file in a directory on a Unix-like shell, use:

for f in *.MOD; do ffmpeg -i "$f" -c:v libtheora -q:v 7 -c:a libvorbis -q:a 4 "${f%.*}.ogv"; done

Quality and compatibility considerations

Re-encoding cannot restore detail already lost in the camera’s MPEG-2 recording. Avoid repeated conversions, and keep the original MOD files as archival masters. Inspect the result for interlacing, because older camcorders often record interlaced video; add -vf bwdif to the FFmpeg command when you need deinterlacing, for example -vf bwdif=mode=send_frame.

Some MOD recordings use non-square pixels or contain 4:3 aspect-ratio metadata. Check the output in a media player and specify the intended display ratio if it appears stretched. OGV playback is less widely supported than MP4/H.264, so use OGV only when the destination application requires it; otherwise, an MP4 conversion is generally more compatible.
