What the IFV format is

IFV is not a single, universally defined video standard. The extension is commonly used for recordings created by surveillance cameras, DVRs, and vendor-specific security applications. Such files may contain proprietary codecs, timestamps, authentication data, or encryption, so a normal media converter may not recognize them.

You may encounter IFV files alongside a manufacturer’s playback program or export utility. The exact camera or DVR brand determines whether the file can be opened directly and whether it can be exported to AVI, MP4, or another standard format.

What the OGV format is

OGV is an Ogg video container generally associated with Theora video and Vorbis or Opus audio. It is supported by VLC, FFmpeg, many Linux applications, and software that accepts open multimedia formats.

OGV can be useful for open-source workflows and applications that specifically request an Ogg container. It is less broadly compatible than MP4/H.264 or WebM, so use it when the receiving application explicitly supports OGV.

How to convert IFV to OGV

Using the online converter

3. Download the resulting .ogv file and test it in the application that needs it.

Online conversion may fail when the IFV file is encrypted, damaged, or tied to a proprietary DVR player. Do not upload sensitive surveillance footage unless the service’s handling and retention terms are acceptable.

Using FFmpeg when the IFV is recognized

Install a current FFmpeg build, then inspect the source before converting:

ffprobe input.ifv

If FFmpeg reports a video stream and identifies its codecs, convert it with:

ffmpeg -i input.ifv -c:v libtheora -q:v 7 -c:a libvorbis -q:a 5 output.ogv

The -q:v value controls Theora quality; lower values reduce quality and file size, while higher values increase both. If the source has no audio stream, use:

ffmpeg -i input.ifv -c:v libtheora -q:v 7 -an output.ogv

If FFmpeg reports an unknown format or codec, open the file in the camera manufacturer’s player and use its Export, Save as, or Convert function to create an AVI or MP4 file first. Then transcode that exported file:

ffmpeg -i exported.mp4 -c:v libtheora -q:v 7 -c:a libvorbis -q:a 5 output.ogv

Quality and compatibility limits

Transcoding from IFV to OGV normally re-encodes the video, so some detail is lost. Keep the original IFV file as the evidence or archival source, and use the OGV only as a working or distribution copy.

Check the frame rate, resolution, timestamps, and audio synchronization after conversion. Surveillance files may use unusual frame sizes, variable frame rates, or proprietary timestamp overlays that are lost during vendor export or FFmpeg conversion.

FFmpeg must be built with Theora and Vorbis encoders for the command above to work. Check availability with ffmpeg -encoders; look for libtheora and libvorbis. If the target application accepts WebM or MP4 instead, either may provide wider playback support than OGV.
