A CCTV or DVR recording saved as IFV may need conversion before it can be edited in a standard video editor or played by software that accepts Motion JPEG. Converting it to MJPG also provides a frame-based format suitable for extraction and some legacy video systems.

What the IFV format is

In the Video category, IFV generally refers to a proprietary surveillance-video recording created by a DVR, NVR, CCTV camera system, or its supplied desktop playback software. IFV is not one universal specification: manufacturers can use different containers, codecs, indexing data, encryption, and timestamp metadata under the same extension.

You usually encounter IFV files after copying recordings from a security recorder, exporting footage from a camera-management application, or opening an archive created by a vendor-specific player. A normal media player may report that the file is unsupported because the required decoder or file index is proprietary.

What the MJPG format is

MJPG, also called Motion JPEG or MJPEG, stores video as a sequence of independent JPEG frames. Each frame can be decoded without processing neighboring frames, which makes the format useful for simple editing, frame capture, industrial cameras, older video software, and systems that require an MJPEG stream.

MJPG is usually stored in an AVI container, commonly with an .avi extension, although some programs use .mjpg for a raw Motion JPEG stream. It is easier to edit frame by frame than many inter-frame codecs, but its files are usually much larger than H.264 or H.265 video at comparable quality.

How to actually convert IFV to MJPG

The most reliable workflow is to use the recorder manufacturer's player first, because it may be the only software that can decode the IFV structure.

  1. Open the IFV file in the DVR or camera manufacturer's playback/export application.
  2. Use the program's export function, commonly found under File → Export, Save as, or Backup.
  3. Choose AVI or another standard intermediate format if MJPG is not offered directly. Select the required camera channel, time range, resolution, and frame rate.
  4. Convert the exported video with FFmpeg. For an MJPEG video in an AVI container, run:
    ffmpeg -i exported.avi -c:v mjpeg -q:v 3 -c:a pcm_s16le output.avi

Lower FFmpeg -q:v values produce better JPEG quality and larger files; values from 2 to 5 are a practical starting range. Use -an instead of -c:a pcm_s16le when the output should contain video only:

ffmpeg -i exported.avi -c:v mjpeg -q:v 3 -an output.avi

If FFmpeg can decode the IFV directly, the intermediate export is unnecessary:

ffmpeg -i recording.ifv -c:v mjpeg -q:v 3 -c:a pcm_s16le output.avi

Check whether direct decoding works with ffprobe recording.ifv. If FFmpeg returns an invalid-data, unknown-format, or unsupported-codec error, use the vendor player rather than renaming the extension. Renaming does not convert the video.

For a raw MJPG output specifically required by another application, use:

ffmpeg -i exported.avi -c:v mjpeg -q:v 3 -an output.mjpg

Raw .mjpg files are less widely supported than MJPEG-in-AVI files. You can also use the free converter on 101convert.com without installing software; if the site cannot decode a particular IFV file, export it through the recorder's own player first.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Converting decoded IFV footage to MJPG normally recompresses every frame, so it cannot restore detail already lost in the source. Keep the original IFV archive when evidentiary value, timestamps, audio, or recorder metadata matters.

MJPG output can be substantially larger than the source. Preserve the original frame rate and dimensions unless the receiving application requires different values; changing them can remove motion detail or introduce scaling artifacts.

Vendor export tools may burn timestamps, camera identifiers, or watermarks into the image. They may also omit proprietary metadata, motion-event indexes, or audio. Verify the exported file with the intended editor or player, and inspect synchronization if audio was retained.
