JVC Everio camcorders often produce TOD files, while editing and playback software may require Motion JPEG instead. Converting the footage also makes it easier to use in older video editors, inspection systems, and applications that accept MJPEG but not TOD.
What the TOD format is
TOD is a video container associated mainly with JVC Everio high-definition camcorders. It normally stores MPEG-2 video in a transport-stream-based file and may contain MPEG audio or AC-3 audio. You typically encounter .tod files after copying recordings directly from an Everio camera or its memory card.
TOD is not a file format that can be converted by changing the filename extension. The video and audio streams must be decoded and written into a format supported by the destination application.
What the MJPG format is
MJPG, or Motion JPEG, stores video as a sequence of independent JPEG-compressed frames. Each frame can be decoded without depending on neighboring frames, which gives MJPEG good compatibility with video capture tools, older editors, monitoring systems, and frame-accurate applications.
MJPEG usually requires substantially more storage than MPEG-2, H.264, or other interframe codecs at comparable visual quality. Its main advantages are simple decoding, easy frame extraction, and reliable editing; it does not usually provide a smaller file for this conversion.
How to actually convert TOD to MJPG
For a no-installation conversion, use the free converter on 101convert.com: select the TOD file, choose MJPG as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file. The service is appropriate when the source is not confidential and the file size is acceptable.
FFmpeg provides a local command-line method. Install FFmpeg, open a terminal in the folder containing the recording, and run:
ffmpeg -i input.tod -c:v mjpeg -q:v 3 -an output.mjpg
This creates a Motion JPEG stream without audio. The -q:v value controls JPEG quality; lower values generally produce better quality and larger files. Values from 2 to 5 are a practical starting range.
Many programs expect MJPEG inside an AVI container rather than a raw .mjpg stream. For that requirement, use:
ffmpeg -i input.tod -c:v mjpeg -q:v 3 -c:a pcm_s16le output.avi
The second command preserves audio as uncompressed PCM and uses the .avi extension because AVI is the container. In an FFmpeg-based application, select the MJPEG video codec and AVI container through its export settings, such as File → Export → Video, if it does not expose a command line.
Quality, compatibility, and limitations
Conversion to MJPEG involves re-encoding the original MPEG-2 video, so it can introduce additional compression loss. Use a lower -q:v value when preserving detail matters, and check the output resolution and frame rate before processing a large batch.
Raw MJPEG output generally cannot carry the original TOD audio. Use the AVI command when the receiving program requires both video and sound. MJPEG files are also much larger, so verify available storage and the destination application's maximum file size.
If FFmpeg reports that the TOD file contains damaged packets, copy the recording again from the camera or memory card before converting; decoding errors can produce missing frames, audio drift, or a truncated output.
