Some older video editors, surveillance systems, and playback devices accept Motion JPEG but cannot decode H.265/HEVC. Converting the video produces an MJPEG stream that is easier to edit frame by frame and use with legacy hardware, although the output is usually much larger.
What the H.265 format is
H.265, also called HEVC, is a video codec designed to deliver similar visual quality at roughly half the bitrate of H.264. Phones, action cameras, security cameras, screen-recording applications, streaming tools, and video editors commonly create H.265 video. It may appear in .h265 or .hevc files, but it is also commonly stored inside MP4, MOV, or MKV containers.
H.265 reduces storage and bandwidth requirements through inter-frame compression, but decoding requires more processing and some older applications lack support. The filename extension identifies the container, if one exists; H.265 identifies the video coding method.
What the MJPG format is
MJPG, usually called Motion JPEG or MJPEG, stores each video frame as an independent JPEG image. It is commonly saved in an AVI container with an .avi extension, although other containers can carry the codec.
Independent frames make MJPEG convenient for older editors, inspection systems, video capture devices, and applications that need quick frame access. It is simpler to decode than H.265 and avoids inter-frame dependencies, but it uses substantially more disk space and bandwidth at comparable visual quality.
How to convert H265 to MJPG
For local conversion, FFmpeg provides reliable control over the codec, quality, frame rate, and audio format. Install FFmpeg, open a terminal in the source-file folder, and run:
ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c:v mjpeg -q:v 3 -c:a pcm_s16le output.avi
Replace input.mp4 with the actual H.265 file. The mjpeg encoder creates Motion JPEG, -q:v 3 selects high video quality, and pcm_s16le stores compatible uncompressed PCM audio. Use a value from 2 to 5 for high quality; larger values reduce quality and file size. If the destination does not need audio, use:
ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c:v mjpeg -q:v 3 -an output.avi
To avoid changing the source dimensions or frame rate, omit scaling and frame-rate options. If the target device requires a specific standard, add them explicitly, for example:
ffmpeg -i input.h265 -vf scale=1280:720 -r 30 -c:v mjpeg -q:v 4 -an output.avi
You can also convert the file for free on the 101convert.com website without installing software. Select the H.265 video, choose MJPG or MJPEG as the output, start the conversion, and download the resulting file. Check that the service accepts the source container and preserves any audio you need.
Quality, compatibility, and limitations
This conversion normally re-encodes the video, so it cannot be lossless: H.265 decoding produces frames, and MJPEG compresses those frames again as JPEG images. Use a lower -q:v value when preserving detail matters, but expect a much larger output; MJPEG files can be several times larger than the H.265 source.
MJPEG output may have no audio if -an is used. AVI with PCM audio is broadly compatible but increases the file size further. Some devices require a particular resolution, frame rate, pixel format, or AVI variant; if playback fails, inspect the device specification and set those values with FFmpeg rather than assuming that every MJPEG file is interchangeable.
