Free online H265 to MOV converter

Some editing applications, Apple workflows, and production systems expect a QuickTime MOV container instead of an H.265 video in MP4 or another container. Converting can either repackage the existing streams without quality loss or transcode them to a codec with wider editing support.

What the H.265 format is

H.265, also called HEVC, is a video codec rather than a complete file container. It compresses video more efficiently than H.264, commonly reducing file size at similar visual quality, and supports 4K, 8K, HDR, and high frame rates.

Phones, mirrorless cameras, action cameras, drones, screen-recording tools, and video applications commonly create H.265 video. The stream may be stored in an .mp4, .mov, .mkv, or another container, so changing the filename extension does not perform a conversion.

What the MOV format is

MOV is a QuickTime container developed by Apple. It can hold video, audio, subtitles, timecode, metadata, and editing-related tracks; the video inside may use H.264, H.265, ProRes, or other codecs.

MOV is common in QuickTime Player, Final Cut Pro, professional post-production, and camera workflows that preserve timecode or metadata. A MOV file can still contain H.265, so converting the container alone does not guarantee that an older editor or device will decode the video.

How to convert H.265 to MOV

Use the online converter

You can convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software. Upload the H.265 video, choose MOV as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file when processing finishes. Use a desktop method instead for confidential footage or very large files.

Repackage the streams with FFmpeg

When the source video and audio codecs are supported by the MOV container and the destination application supports H.265, remuxing is fastest and does not recompress the media:

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -map 0 -c copy output.mov

This changes the container only. It preserves the original quality, bitrate, frame rate, and audio, but FFmpeg may stop if a source stream cannot be written correctly to MOV. Replace input.mp4 with the actual source filename; the source extension does not have to be MP4.

Transcode for broader playback or editing support

For a MOV containing widely supported H.264 video and AAC audio, use:

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 18 -c:a aac -b:a 192k output.mov

The -crf value controls H.264 quality; lower values produce larger files. This process decodes and re-encodes the video, so it takes longer and can reduce quality compared with stream copying.

Use an editing codec

For a large intermediate file intended for professional editing, transcode to Apple ProRes:

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c:v prores_ks -profile:v 3 -c:a pcm_s16le output.mov

ProRes is easier for many editors to decode frame by frame, but the resulting MOV can be several times larger than the H.265 source. Choose ProRes profile 3 for ProRes 422 HQ; use profile 2 for ProRes 422 when a smaller intermediate is acceptable.

In a desktop editor, import the source and select File → Export or Share → Export file, choose MOV or QuickTime, then select H.264, H.265, or ProRes according to the target application's requirements. Exact menu names and available codecs vary by application.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

• Container conversion with -c copy is lossless because no video or audio samples are re-encoded.
• Transcoding cannot restore detail already lost during the original H.265 compression. Exporting at a higher bitrate does not recover it.
• A MOV containing H.265 remains dependent on HEVC decoder support. Choose H.264 for older players and systems, or ProRes for editing compatibility.
• HEVC may use 10-bit color, HDR metadata, variable frame rate, or unusual audio formats. Check that the destination application preserves the required property; a compatibility transcode may alter it.
• Some MOV workflows require PCM audio, timecode, or a specific ProRes profile. Confirm the delivery specification before selecting the output codec.
