How to convert ogv to mov file

  • Video

Some Apple and professional editing applications accept MOV more consistently than OGV, so an OGV recording may need conversion before editing or playback. Converting it can also make the file easier to share with devices and software that do not support Ogg video.

What the OGV format is

OGV is the video-oriented file extension for the Ogg container. It commonly contains Theora video with Vorbis or Opus audio and is associated with open-source software, older HTML5 video workflows, Wikimedia media, Linux applications, and some screen-recording tools.

Programs such as FFmpeg and VLC can create or export OGV files. Browser and editor support is less consistent than it was during early HTML5 implementations; some current applications may reject an OGV file or play only its audio.

What the MOV format is

MOV is a multimedia container developed by Apple for QuickTime. It can hold different combinations of video and audio codecs, including H.264 with AAC for general playback, HEVC for supported devices, and Apple ProRes with uncompressed PCM audio for editing.

MOV is useful when software such as QuickTime Player, iMovie, or Final Cut Pro requests it, and when an editing workflow needs ProRes, timecode, or production metadata. The .mov extension does not guarantee compatibility: the codecs inside the container determine which applications can decode the file.

How to convert with FFmpeg

FFmpeg is the most flexible desktop option for direct conversion, batch processing, and control over codecs and quality.

  1. Install FFmpeg from your operating system's package manager or an official FFmpeg distribution.
  2. Place the source file in an accessible folder and open a terminal in that folder.
  3. Run this command, replacing the filenames as needed:

ffmpeg -i input.ogv -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 18 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac -b:a 192k -movflags +faststart output.mov

This creates an H.264 video and AAC audio in a MOV container. -crf 18 targets high visual quality with variable bitrate; values from about 18 to 23 are common, with higher values producing smaller files and lower quality. yuv420p improves compatibility with older playback software, and +faststart moves the MOV index toward the beginning for faster playback while the file is being accessed over a network.

For an editing workflow that specifically requires Apple ProRes, use a substantially larger file with an editing-oriented codec:

ffmpeg -i input.ogv -c:v prores_ks -profile:v 3 -c:a pcm_s16le output.mov

Here, profile:v 3 selects ProRes HQ, while pcm_s16le produces uncompressed audio. ProRes and PCM preserve more suitable editing intermediates than H.264 and AAC, but they require much more storage. Confirm the required ProRes profile with the receiving application.

How to convert without installing software

You can convert an OGV file for free on 101convert.com. Upload the file, select MOV as the output format, start the conversion, and download the result when processing finishes. Use a desktop converter instead for confidential footage, very large files, or requirements such as ProRes, a fixed bitrate, or a specific frame rate.

Quality and compatibility limitations

The H.264/AAC command performs a lossy transcode: FFmpeg decodes the OGV streams and compresses them again, so it cannot restore detail already lost in the source. Re-encoding can also change the frame rate, audio timing, metadata, subtitles, or chapters, so check the output's duration, synchronization, and required streams.

Renaming input.ogv to input.mov does not convert the file. Stream copying with -c copy avoids re-encoding but is appropriate only when the destination MOV workflow supports the original Theora, Vorbis, or Opus streams; many Apple and professional applications do not. Inspect the source with ffprobe input.ogv when codec, subtitle, chapter, or metadata details matter.
