How to convert aae to mov file

  • Video

Source format: AAE

AAE files are Apple Photos sidecar files created by the Photos app on iPhone, iPad, and macOS. They store edit instructions such as filters, crops, and adjustments, rather than the actual image or video data. An AAE file is usually created when you edit a photo or video in Apple Photos and then share or transfer the item to another device or computer.

For video workflows, an AAE file may accompany an original clip from an iPhone or iPad, but it is not a video file itself. It cannot be played directly and is only meaningful together with the original media and Apple’s editing metadata.

Target format: MOV

MOV is a QuickTime multimedia container developed by Apple. It is widely used for video, audio, and metadata, especially in Apple ecosystems, professional editing, and camera workflows. MOV works well with macOS, iOS, Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere Pro, and many other editors and players.

Compared with AAE, MOV is a real media file that can be played, edited, and shared. It is a strong choice when you need a standard video container for archiving or post-production.

Can AAE be converted to MOV?

No direct conversion is possible. An AAE file does not contain video data, so there is nothing to transcode into .mov. In practice, you must use the original video file that the AAE file references, then export or save that video as MOV if needed.

Important: AAE files are often confused with Adobe After Effects project files, but After Effects projects use .aep, not .aae. So .aae to .mov is not an After Effects conversion.

How to get a MOV file from an AAE-edited video

Best desktop option: Apple Photos on macOS

  1. Import the original video and its matching .aae file into Photos on a Mac.
  2. Open the video in Photos and confirm the edits are applied.
  3. Choose File → Export → Export [number] Video(s) to export the edited version, or File → Export → Export Unmodified Original if you want the untouched source.
  4. If the exported file is not already .mov, transcode it to MOV with a video tool such as QuickTime Player, HandBrake, or Adobe Media Encoder.

Alternative desktop option: Adobe Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro

  1. Import the original video into the editor.
  2. Recreate the edits described by the AAE metadata if needed.
  3. Export using File → Export and choose QuickTime or MOV as the output format.

Online converters

If you already have a real video file and only need to convert it to MOV, reputable online converters such as CloudConvert or Convertio can help. Upload the source video, select MOV as the output, and download the converted file. These services do not convert AAE directly; they only convert the actual media file.

Notes on quality and compatibility

AAE cannot be converted by itself into MOV because it contains only edit metadata. If the original photo or video is missing, the AAE file is not useful on its own.

When exporting to MOV, quality depends on the chosen codec and settings. A MOV container can hold high-quality or lossless video, but transcoding may still reduce quality if you re-encode the footage. For best results, export at the original resolution and frame rate when possible.

Compatibility is generally excellent for MOV on Apple devices and professional editors, but some players on Windows or web platforms may prefer MP4. If broad playback compatibility matters more than Apple workflow compatibility, consider whether MOV is the best final format for your needs.

Simply put, it is impossible to convert AAE to MOV directly.
Thus, there is no so-called aae to mov converter or a free online .aae to .mov conversion tool.
