Free online OGV to M4V converter

Some Apple-oriented media libraries, editors, and devices handle M4V more reliably than OGV. Converting also replaces commonly unsupported Theora video with H.264 and AAC, making the file easier to play, edit, and share.

What the OGV format is

OGV is a video container associated with the open Ogg multimedia framework. It commonly contains Theora video with Vorbis or Opus audio and is used by open-source applications, Linux media workflows, educational recordings, older websites, and software that avoids proprietary codecs.

VLC, FFmpeg-based tools, Kdenlive, and some older screen-recording or publishing programs can create or export OGV files. Support varies because the container and its usual codecs are less widely implemented than MPEG-4 video formats.

What the M4V format is

M4V is an MPEG-4 video filename extension based on the ISO Base Media File Format. It commonly contains H.264 video and AAC audio, although the extension alone does not guarantee those codecs. Apple media software uses M4V extensively; some files distributed through Apple services can include FairPlay DRM, but a newly converted M4V file is not automatically DRM-protected.

H.264/AAC M4V files work with many current media players, phones, televisions, editors, and playback libraries. M4V is not inherently higher quality than OGV or MP4; its compatibility depends on the codecs, profile, resolution, frame rate, and the application reading it.

How to convert OGV to M4V

The conversion is normally a re-encode because OGV commonly contains Theora, while broadly compatible M4V output usually uses H.264. FFmpeg provides the most direct control over the codecs and quality.

Using FFmpeg

Install a current FFmpeg build, open a terminal in the folder containing the source file, and run:

ffmpeg -i input.ogv -c:v libx264 -crf 20 -preset medium -c:a aac -b:a 160k -movflags +faststart output.m4v

Replace input.ogv with the actual filename. The -crf value controls H.264 quality: lower values produce larger files, and 18–23 is a practical range. Use -preset slow to reduce the file size at roughly the same quality, at the cost of longer encoding time. -movflags +faststart moves the MP4 metadata near the beginning for faster progressive playback.

Without a filter, FFmpeg preserves the source dimensions and normally preserves its frame rate. To make a 720p version while maintaining the aspect ratio, use:

ffmpeg -i input.ogv -vf scale=-2:720 -c:v libx264 -crf 21 -preset medium -c:a aac -b:a 160k -movflags +faststart output.m4v

The -2 makes FFmpeg calculate an even width, which is suitable for common H.264 encoding. If the source has no audio stream, remove the audio options and use -an.

When an OGV contains several streams, inspect them first:

ffprobe input.ogv

Explicitly select the first video and audio streams when necessary:

ffmpeg -i input.ogv -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -c:v libx264 -crf 20 -c:a aac -b:a 160k output.m4v

Using a desktop interface

VLC can convert the file through Media → Convert/Save. Add the OGV file, choose Convert, select or create a profile using H.264 video and AAC audio, set a destination filename ending in .m4v, and start the conversion. Verify the profile's codec settings; changing only the filename extension does not convert the video.

HandBrake can also re-encode OGV to H.264/AAC, but its normal output is MP4 rather than M4V. Use it when the receiving application accepts MP4, or rename the resulting file only after confirming that the application distinguishes neither extension nor container type.

Quality and compatibility limits

Re-encoding cannot recover detail already lost in the OGV source. Higher quality settings increase file size, while scaling down reduces both resolution and size; avoid enlarging a low-resolution source.

H.264/AAC is usually more compatible than Theora/Vorbis, but older Apple devices may require specific H.264 profiles, levels, resolutions, and frame rates. For a device with documented restrictions, add settings such as -profile:v main -level 3.1 only when those restrictions require them, then test the result on the target device.

Multiple audio tracks, subtitles, chapters, and unusual variable frame timing may not transfer as expected. Use -map to choose streams, and burn subtitles into the video with an FFmpeg subtitle filter when the target player cannot display a separate subtitle track.
