Some Apple-oriented players, editors, and media libraries expect an .m4v file rather than an HEVC source, and older devices may not decode HEVC at all. Converting usually means placing the video in an M4V-compatible container and, when necessary, re-encoding HEVC as H.264.

What the HEVC format is

HEVC (H.265) is a video codec, not a container. It compresses video more efficiently than H.264, so phones, action cameras, screen-recording tools, and cameras commonly create HEVC video inside .mp4, .mov, or .mkv files; some devices also save an elementary stream with an .hevc extension.

HEVC reduces file size at comparable visual quality, but hardware and software support is less universal than H.264 support. The filename extension alone does not identify the codec: inspect the file with MediaInfo or FFmpeg before choosing a conversion mode.

What the M4V format is

M4V is an MPEG-4 video file extension generally associated with Apple software, including iTunes and Apple TV libraries. It commonly contains H.264 video and AAC audio in an MP4-compatible container. Some commercially distributed M4V files use Apple FairPlay DRM; ordinary conversion tools cannot convert or remove that protection.

M4V is useful when a target application specifically expects the extension, or when H.264/AAC compatibility matters more than HEVC compression efficiency. An unprotected M4V file is structurally close to MP4, so changing the extension alone can sometimes work, but it does not change an HEVC video stream into H.264.

How to convert HEVC to M4V

Using the online converter

  1. Open the HEVC-to-M4V converter on 101convert.com; the service can be used free without installing software.
  2. Upload the source file and select M4V as the output format.
  3. Start the conversion, then download the resulting file when processing finishes.
  4. Test the output in the program or device that rejected the original file. If HEVC decoding is the actual problem, the service must re-encode the video as H.264 rather than merely change the container.

Using FFmpeg on a computer

Install FFmpeg, open a terminal in the source folder, and re-encode the video to H.264 with AAC audio:

ffmpeg -i input.hevc -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 20 -c:a aac -b:a 192k -movflags +faststart output.m4v

Replace input.hevc with the actual filename; for an MP4, MOV, or MKV source, use that filename instead. The -crf 20 value controls H.264 quality: lower values increase quality and file size, while values around 18–23 are common. -movflags +faststart moves metadata near the beginning for better progressive playback.

If the destination supports HEVC and only requires an M4V-compatible container, avoid quality loss with stream copying:

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? -c copy -f mp4 output.m4v

This second command does not make HEVC more compatible; it only repackages the streams. It may fail or produce an unusable result if the source contains unsupported audio, subtitles, metadata, or a raw stream that FFmpeg cannot place in an MP4 container.

Quality and compatibility considerations

  • Re-encoding HEVC as H.264 is lossy and can increase the file size. Keep the original when archival quality matters.
  • Match the source frame rate and dimensions unless the target device requires a change; unnecessary scaling or frame-rate conversion adds quality loss.
  • H.264 video with AAC-LC audio is the safest general combination for M4V playback. Some older players also require stereo audio and standard pixel formats such as yuv420p; add -pix_fmt yuv420p if compatibility testing shows a black screen or playback failure.
  • Multiple audio tracks, subtitles, HDR metadata, chapters, and high-bit-depth color may not survive a basic conversion. Use explicit FFmpeg mapping and test those features if they matter.
