Free online WMV to M4V converter

A phone, Apple device, video editor, or media library may require an MPEG-4-based file instead of Windows Media Video. Converting the file to M4V can improve compatibility while retaining efficient H.264 video and AAC audio.

What the WMV format is

WMV (Windows Media Video) is a Microsoft video format commonly encoded with Windows Media codecs and stored in an ASF-based container. Windows Media Player, older Windows applications, screen-recording software, and some corporate media systems use WMV files.

Support is less consistent in macOS, iOS, Android, smart-TV, browser, and modern editing workflows, particularly when a file uses an older WMV codec or an uncommon audio format.

What the M4V format is

M4V is an MPEG-4 container associated with Apple software, Apple TV, and older iTunes distribution. A broadly compatible M4V file normally contains H.264 video and AAC audio, which provide efficient compression and support across many devices and media players.

M4V and MP4 use closely related container structures; the extension does not by itself determine the codecs or guarantee compatibility. M4V is useful when a device, application, or Apple-oriented media library specifically expects that extension. Chapters, subtitles, and multiple audio tracks can be stored in suitable MPEG-4 files, but their support depends on the application and output settings.

How to convert WMV files to M4V

Do not upload confidential or copyrighted material unless the service and conversion are permitted for that content.

For local processing, FFmpeg provides control over codecs, quality, dimensions, and audio:

Replace the input and output filenames as needed. The command decodes the WMV stream, encodes H.264 video and AAC audio, and writes an M4V container. Quoting filenames preserves spaces and special characters.

• Quality: H.264 CRF values around 18–23 are common; a lower value produces higher quality and a larger file. CRF 22 is a reasonable general-purpose starting point.
• Dimensions: The command preserves the source dimensions. To resize while keeping the aspect ratio, add -vf scale=1280:-2.
• Frame rate: Preserve the source frame rate unless the target device requires another rate. Unnecessary frame-rate conversion can cause duplicated or dropped frames.
• Audio: The optional mapping expression includes the first audio stream when one exists. Use explicit mapping if the file contains multiple audio tracks or subtitles that must be retained.

Desktop software options

HandBrake is a free desktop transcoder for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Open the WMV with File → Open Source, select an MP4 container, choose an H.264 video encoder and AAC audio, set the destination filename, and select Start Encode. HandBrake generally presents MP4 rather than a separate M4V format; if the receiving application accepts an MP4-compatible M4V file, use an .m4v destination extension only when supported by that workflow. Renaming the extension alone does not transcode the WMV.

FFmpeg is preferable when the output must be generated with a specific filename, codec, stream mapping, subtitle selection, or scaling rule. HandBrake is more convenient when presets and a graphical interface are sufficient.

Quality and compatibility limits

WMV and H.264 normally use different video codecs, so conversion requires re-encoding and can reduce quality. Keep the original WMV, use the highest practical quality setting, and avoid repeated transcoding. The output may be smaller or larger than the source because file size depends on codec, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and source complexity.

Changing .wmv to .m4v does not convert the file. The output must contain codecs supported by the target device or application; H.264 with AAC and yuv420p is generally safer than unusual profiles, pixel formats, or audio codecs.

Check the result for video playback, audio sync, subtitles, chapters, and all required audio tracks. Interlaced sources may need deinterlacing, and variable-frame-rate sources can require testing in the target editor.

DRM-protected WMV files cannot normally be converted by standard tools. Use an authorized, unprotected source rather than attempting to bypass access controls.
