Some Apple-oriented players, editors, and devices expect an .m4v file rather than an HEVC elementary stream or another container. Converting can also replace HEVC with H.264 when the receiving software cannot decode H.265.

What the H265 format is

H.265, also called HEVC, is a video codec rather than a complete container format. It compresses video more efficiently than H.264, so phones, cameras, screen recorders, Blu-ray workflows, OBS, HandBrake, FFmpeg, and video editors commonly create or export it.

A file named video.h265 is often a raw HEVC elementary stream with no audio, subtitles, or general metadata. HEVC video may also be stored inside .mp4, .mkv, or other containers; changing only the extension does not convert either the codec or the container.

What the M4V format is

M4V is an MPEG-4 container variant commonly associated with Apple video applications, including the Apple TV app and older iTunes workflows. It can contain H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, subtitles, chapters, and metadata, although support depends on the playback program.

M4V is useful when a workflow specifically expects the .m4v extension or an Apple-compatible MPEG-4 package. It does not automatically make HEVC video compatible: the codec inside the file remains the deciding factor.

How to convert H265 to M4V

FFmpeg is the most controllable desktop option. Install FFmpeg, place the source in the working folder, and inspect it with:

ffprobe input.h265

For a raw HEVC video that needs broad playback compatibility, re-encode to H.264 and add AAC audio only when an audio stream exists. A raw .h265 file normally contains video only:

ffmpeg -i input.h265 -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 20 -pix_fmt yuv420p -movflags +faststart output.m4v

crf 18 to 23 is a practical H.264 quality range; lower values produce larger files. The yuv420p setting improves compatibility with older players and devices.

If the source is a container such as input.mkv and contains audio, use:

ffmpeg -i input.mkv -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 20 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac -b:a 160k -movflags +faststart output.m4v

If the target player supports HEVC and the source is already a compatible container, avoid quality loss by copying the video stream and converting only audio when necessary:

ffmpeg -i input.mkv -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? -c:v copy -c:a aac -b:a 160k -movflags +faststart output.m4v

For a no-install conversion, upload the file to 101convert.com and choose M4V as the output format. Raw .h265 files may lack audio and timing information, so a desktop tool is preferable when the upload fails or the result needs precise stream control.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Re-encoding from H.265 to H.264 causes generation loss; retain the original when archiving and use a lower CRF only when the output must preserve more detail. Stream copying avoids video loss but leaves HEVC compatibility requirements unchanged.

A file extension cannot remove DRM. Protected M4V files from Apple services require authorized playback and cannot be converted by ordinary remuxing. Check the output with ffprobe output.m4v and test both video decoding and audio playback in the target application.
