Devices and broadcast applications sometimes require an MPEG transport stream instead of a standalone HEVC file. Converting can package H.265 video for transmission, set-top boxes, IPTV systems, or editing software that accepts TS.

What the H.265 format is

H.265, also called HEVC, is a video compression standard designed to provide similar visual quality at a lower bitrate than H.264. Security cameras, smartphones, action cameras, screen recorders, OBS, HandBrake, FFmpeg, and modern editing applications commonly create H.265 video.

A file ending in .h265 or .hevc may contain a raw HEVC bitstream without audio, timestamps, or a general-purpose container. HEVC video can also be stored inside .mp4, .mkv, and other container formats; the filename extension alone does not show whether repacking or re-encoding is required.

What the TS format is

TS, or MPEG-2 Transport Stream, is a container built for continuous delivery of audio and video. It is used in broadcast television, DVB, IPTV, Blu-ray-related workflows, streaming contribution, and hardware systems that process packets while a recording is still arriving.

TS includes packetized streams, timestamps, and error-resilience features that make it more suitable than MP4 for transmission over imperfect or uninterrupted links. Modern TS files can carry HEVC, but older televisions, players, and broadcast devices may accept only H.264 or MPEG-2 video inside TS.

How to convert H.265 to TS

Use the built-in online converter

You can convert the file for free on 101convert.com without installing software. Upload the H.265 file, choose TS as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file when processing finishes. This option is convenient for ordinary files, but avoid uploading confidential recordings and check the output device's HEVC support.

Remux with FFmpeg when the video is already compatible

Remuxing changes the container without decoding and re-encoding the video, so it is fast and does not reduce image quality. For a raw HEVC bitstream, run:

ffmpeg -f hevc -i input.h265 -c:v copy -f mpegts output.ts

For an MP4 or MKV file that already contains HEVC, run:

ffmpeg -i input.mkv -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? -c copy -f mpegts output.ts

The optional audio mapping includes audio when present. If the source contains unsupported subtitles, data streams, or incompatible audio, select only the streams required by the target device, for example:

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c:v copy -c:a aac -b:a 192k -f mpegts output.ts

Transcode when the target device cannot decode HEVC

Use H.264 video for older televisions, set-top boxes, or editing systems:

ffmpeg -i input.h265 -f hevc -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 20 -c:a aac -b:a 192k -f mpegts output.ts

When the input is already a container, omit -f hevc. Adjust -crf to control quality: lower values produce larger files, while values around 18–23 are common starting points for H.264. Transcoding takes substantially longer and introduces generation loss.

Quality and compatibility considerations

A stream copy such as -c:v copy preserves the encoded HEVC data; it does not improve quality or reduce the bitrate. Re-encoding is necessary only when the source codec, audio format, resolution, frame rate, or profile is incompatible with the receiving software.

Raw .h265 input usually has no audio. FFmpeg cannot create missing audio during remuxing, so add an audio stream from another source or use a container file that already includes audio. TS playback also depends on timestamps and codec support; if a device rejects the remuxed file, try H.264 video with AAC audio rather than assuming the TS container is the problem.
