Free online TREC to TS converter

A TREC recording usually needs conversion when a media player, broadcast workflow, or hardware device accepts MPEG transport stream (.ts) but cannot open Camtasia’s recording format. The reliable workflow is to export the TREC recording to a standard video file, then create an MPEG-TS file from that export.

What the TREC format is

TREC is TechSmith’s recording container used by Camtasia Recorder and Camtasia. It stores screen-capture video together with recorded audio and may retain webcam footage, cursor data, and recording metadata.

You normally encounter .trec files after recording a presentation, software demonstration, training session, or desktop video with Camtasia. TREC is intended for opening and editing in Camtasia rather than for general-purpose playback, streaming, or hardware compatibility.

What the TS format is

TS usually means MPEG transport stream, a media container commonly saved with the .ts extension. It is used for broadcast video, IPTV, segmented streaming, Blu-ray-related workflows, and devices that expect packetized MPEG transport streams.

TS can carry H.264 or H.265 video and AAC, MP2, or AC-3 audio. Its packet structure tolerates transmission errors better than many file-oriented containers, but it is less convenient than MP4 for ordinary editing and sharing. Converting to TS does not make the video inherently higher quality; it changes the container and, when required, the codecs.

How to convert TREC to TS

Using Camtasia and FFmpeg

1. Open the .trec file in Camtasia.
2. Export it as a standard video using File → Export → Local File or the equivalent export command in your Camtasia version. Choose MP4 and retain the source resolution and frame rate.
3. Install FFmpeg, then convert the exported file with:

ffmpeg -i recording.mp4 -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 18 -c:a aac -b:a 192k -f mpegts recording.ts

This encodes H.264 video and AAC audio in an MPEG transport stream. Lower CRF values produce larger files and generally higher visual quality; a value around 18 is near-transparent for many screen recordings, while values from 20 to 23 reduce size.

If the exported MP4 already contains codecs accepted by the target device, try remuxing without re-encoding:

ffmpeg -i recording.mp4 -map 0 -c copy -f mpegts recording.ts

Remuxing is faster and avoids another generation of quality loss, but it can fail or produce an unusable file when the source codecs, subtitle tracks, or stream layout are incompatible with MPEG-TS playback.

Using the online converter

If the service does not recognize a particular TREC recording, export it from Camtasia to MP4 first and convert that file instead.

Quality and compatibility limitations

A TREC-to-TS conversion produces a finished media file, not an editable Camtasia recording. Camtasia-only information such as separate editing tracks, cursor effects, callouts, and project-level edits may be rendered into the video or omitted during export.

Use the original recording’s frame rate and dimensions when exporting from Camtasia. Changing them can cause blurred text, uneven cursor movement, or unnecessary encoding. Check the resulting TS file with the intended player or device because some hardware accepts only H.264 video with AAC or MP2 audio, specific frame rates, or a limited resolution.

For broadcast or streaming systems that require fixed bitrate, keyframe interval, or audio sample rate, specify those values explicitly in FFmpeg. For example, -r 30 forces 30 fps, while -ar 48000 sets audio to 48 kHz; forcing values that do not match the source can require re-encoding and may alter timing.
