Older Camtasia recordings are stored as TREC files, while some legacy Flash-based players and workflows expect F4V video. Converting normally requires opening the recording in Camtasia, exporting a standard video, and packaging or encoding that result as F4V.

What the TREC format is

TREC is TechSmith’s proprietary recording format used by Camtasia Recorder and Camtasia Studio. It can contain screen-capture video, microphone or system audio, cursor data, and recording metadata, so it is not a conventional video container that most media players can open directly.

You usually encounter TREC files in older Camtasia project folders, exported recordings, or backups from Windows installations. Camtasia is the appropriate application for interpreting the recording data and preserving features such as cursor visibility and recorded audio.

What the F4V format is

F4V is an Adobe Flash Video container based on the ISO Base Media File Format. It was designed for H.264 video with AAC audio and was used for web delivery through Adobe Flash Player.

F4V can hold higher-quality H.264 video than the older FLV video format, but Flash Player has been discontinued and modern browsers generally do not play F4V directly. Use F4V only when a legacy application, archive specification, or media system explicitly requires it.

How to convert TREC to F4V

Using Camtasia and FFmpeg

  1. Open the TREC file in Camtasia. If Camtasia opens the recording through a project rather than directly, create or open the associated project and add the recording to its timeline.
  2. Export a video through Share or Export, depending on the Camtasia version. Select MP4 and choose the required frame size, frame rate, and audio settings. Save the result as recording.mp4.
  3. Install FFmpeg, then create an F4V container with H.264 video and AAC audio:

ffmpeg -i recording.mp4 -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac -b:a 128k -movflags +faststart output.f4v

The command re-encodes the video for broad F4V compatibility. For an MP4 already containing compatible H.264 video and AAC audio, try container-only conversion first:

ffmpeg -i recording.mp4 -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? -c copy output.f4v

If the copy command fails or the resulting file is rejected, use the re-encoding command. Verify the output with ffprobe output.f4v.

Using the built-in online converter

You can convert the file for free on 101convert.com without installing software. Upload the TREC recording, select F4V as the output format, start the conversion, and download the generated file. Because TREC is proprietary, the service must support TREC decoding; if it cannot read the file, export MP4 from Camtasia first and convert that MP4 to F4V.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Exporting through Camtasia can flatten timeline edits, callouts, captions, cursor effects, and separate audio tracks into one rendered video. Keep the original TREC file and Camtasia project if later editing may be needed.

F4V is not a modern archival format. For current playback and editing, retain the Camtasia source and an MP4 copy using H.264 video and AAC audio; deliver the F4V only to systems that specifically require it. Re-encoding changes image quality, so match the source dimensions and frame rate and avoid unnecessarily low video bitrates.
