MOD camcorder footage may need conversion because many current editors and playback systems do not recognize the extension directly, while F4V packages H.264 video and AAC audio in a Flash-compatible container. You can convert it with FFmpeg or use the free converter on 101convert.com without installing software.

What the MOD format is

In the Video category, MOD is a camcorder recording format based on an MPEG-2 program stream. JVC Everio, Panasonic and some Canon standard-definition camcorders commonly save video with the .MOD extension, often alongside .MOI metadata files.

MOD files usually contain MPEG-2 video with MPEG Layer II or AC-3 audio at standard-definition resolutions such as 720×480 or 720×576. The extension identifies the camera’s file naming convention rather than a fundamentally different video codec; some players can open a copy renamed from clip.MOD to clip.mpg, but renaming does not convert or re-encode the file.

What the F4V format is

F4V is Adobe’s ISO Base Media-based Flash Video container, generally used with H.264 video and AAC audio. It was designed for Adobe Flash Media Server, Flash Player and older web-video workflows, and is more closely related to MP4 than to the older FLV container.

F4V can provide smaller files and broader codec compatibility than MPEG-2 MOD footage when the video is re-encoded with H.264. Modern browsers and video platforms have largely discontinued Flash support, so MP4 is usually a better target for new websites, phones and editing applications unless a specific legacy system requires .f4v.

How to actually convert MOD to F4V

Using FFmpeg

  1. Install FFmpeg from a trusted desktop package or distribution repository and copy the MOD footage to a working folder.
  2. Run this command, replacing the filenames as needed:

ffmpeg -i input.MOD -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 20 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac -b:a 160k -f f4v output.f4v

The command decodes the MPEG-2 source, encodes H.264 video at a visually high-quality constant rate factor, converts audio to AAC, and writes an F4V container. Use -crf 18 for a larger, higher-quality file or -crf 23 for a smaller file; the useful range depends on the source and the required file size.

For interlaced camcorder footage intended for progressive screens, add a deinterlacing filter before the other video options:

ffmpeg -i input.MOD -vf yadif -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 20 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac -b:a 160k -f f4v output.f4v

To process several files in a shell, run the command separately for each input rather than relying on a simple extension change. Keep the original MOD and MOI files until the converted output has been checked.

Using the built-in online converter

On 101convert.com, select the Video converter, upload the MOD file, choose F4V as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file. This option requires no software installation; avoid uploading footage that contains confidential or personal material unless the service’s handling policy is acceptable.

Quality, compatibility and limitations

Because MOD normally contains standard-definition MPEG-2, converting it to F4V cannot create additional detail. H.264 re-encoding introduces a generation loss, so preserve the original files for archival use and select a lower CRF value when quality matters.

Many camcorder MOD recordings are interlaced. Deinterlacing improves playback on progressive displays but changes motion detail; omit -vf yadif if the receiving editor or playback device correctly handles interlaced video.

F4V support is less common than MP4 support outside legacy Flash systems. If the target application accepts MP4, use the same H.264/AAC settings with an .mp4 output instead; if it specifically checks for F4V, retain the explicit -f f4v option and verify the result in the target software.
